Yankees vs. Mets Subway Series Highlights Approaching Interleague Play

July 11, 2011

The New York Yankees have been a perennial World Series contender for the better part of the last decade and a half while winning five World Series titles along the way.

The New York Mets clearly haven’t been able to keep up with the success of their in-city counterparts while generally playing second fiddle to the widely-popular Yanks. As a measure of each teams’ success, the Yankees have won a record, 27 world championships compared with just two for the Mets (1969-1986).

Despite each team’s glaring difference in overall success throughout the years, MLB bettors and baseball lovers everywhere will be treated to what may be the crown jewel of Interleague play when the two franchises get together on Friday to kick off the start of the Interleague play with a three-game set that will run throughout the weekend.

This expert handicapping breakdown will give devoted MLB gamblers the knowledge they’ll need in order to make a trio of potentially winning wagers on all three contests on what looks like another fun-filled round of Interleague pairings.

Before I get started with that however, let me provide some details on the history of this rivalry.

The Yankees beat the Mets in the 2000 World Series and own a 47-33 advantage in Interleague play over the Mets. Both ballclubs won two of their three home games against their rivals last season.

Last season, the two franchises split their six Interleague meetings evenly after the Yankees pounded the Mets by taking fie of the six meetings against their rivals in 2009.

In 14 seasons of Interleague meetings, the Mets have recorded just two winning campaigns against the Yankees, going 4-2 in six games 2004 and again in 2008.

The Yankees have won the Interleague series six times with the two New York rivals splitting their annual six Interleague meetings on six other occasions.

Okay, now that you’ve got the history of Interleague play between the Yankees and Mets, let’s look at this weekend’s approaching three-game set, which will be played at Yankees Stadium.

Friday, May, 20 7:05 PM ET
The Mets will hand the ball to right-hander R.A. Dickey (1-5, 5.08 ERA) while the Yankees right-hander counter with veteran right-hander Freddy Garcia (2-3, 3.20 ERA).

The Mets have lost three straight with Dickey on the mound while giving up seven runs in two of those outings. Fortunately for the Mets and their baseball betting backers, the Yankees haven’t been much better behind Freddy Garcia as they’ve dropped three of the right-hander’s last four starts overall.

Saturday, May 21
The Mets will hand the ball to veteran southpaw starter Chris Capuano (3-4, 4.78 ERA) hoping for a strong outing after the left-hander limited Houston to two runs in five innings in his last start to snap a three-start losing streak. Capuano has allowed an identical two earned runs in each of his last three starts.

The Yankees will counter with veteran right-hander A.J. Burnett (4-3, 3.99 ERA) hoping the talented, but inconsistent hurler can bounce back after getting smacked around for six earned runs on eight hits, including three home runs, in 5.2 innings of a 6-5 loss to Tampa Bay on Monday.

Sunday, May, 22
The Mets will turn to right-hander Mike Pelfrey (3-3, 5.11 ERA) looking for the veteran to continue pitching at the high level he has in each of his last three starts. Pelfrey limited Florida to just one earned run on six hits in 7.2 innings the last time out and has limited the opposition to just on run in two of his last three starts and three of five overall.

The Yankees will counter with right-hander Ivan Nova (4-3, 4.33 ERA) looking for another strong outing from the young hurler after he limited Tampa Bay to one run on four hits in 5.1 innings of a 6-2 win on Tuesday. Overall, Nova has held the opposition to two earned runs or less in four of his last five starts.
