Padding Your Bankroll: Wednesday February 3

After spending Saturday in the sunshine of Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita playing the Sunshine Millions races, it is back to Aqueduct on Wednesday, and we likely are going to be greeted by a few snow showers.

Frigid temperatures knocked out racing at the Big A after the third race on Saturday, but the temperatures will be in the mid to high 30’s today.

Phil saw his shadow yesterday, which means we are going to see six more weeks of winter, probably not good news for the Aqueduct jockey colony.

The play of the day is a $25,000 claiming race, with our top pick Gimmeanotherwink trying to get a route of ground for the first time.

The Late Pick 3 play starts with the seventh race, and is a $24 investment. I don’t think we will light up the toteboard with our play, but we should be able to pad our bankroll in the racebook with a nice profit.

Today’s Play of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 5 Clm $25,000 (2:24 ET)
#5 Gimmeanotherwink   5/2
#2 Caldron   7/2
#3 Fortunate Run   2/1
#7 Talk to Nick   12/1

Analysis: #5 Gimmeanotherwink tracked the early pace while three wide and came up short in the stretch last out in a third place finish against $50K starter allowance foes. The colt makes his third start off a three month break for the Terranova barn that is 20% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from sprint to route. The colt looks like he can handle the stretch out to two turns for the first time here.

#2 Caldron set the early fractions and weakened to finish third despite catching an inner surface that was slightly favoring speed. The gelding doe shave enough pedigree to handle the stretch out and hard to knock anything Asmussen has been sending out at the meet, the barn is hitting at a 42% clip. The trainer is 20% winners overall moving runners from sprint to route.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 2/1 or better.
EX: 2,5 / 2,3,5,7
TRI: 2,5 / 2,3,5,7 / 2,3,5,7,8

Today’s Pick 3 Play from Aqueduct:

Starting in Race 7: $1: 2,5,6 / 6,7 / 5,7,8,9 = $24

AQU Race 7 OClm $25,000N1X (3:20 ET)
#2 Rises the Phoenix, #6 Diamond District, #5 Next Day

#2 Rises the Phoenix was not a threat last out versus state bred Alw-2 optional claimers in his first go off a 10-month layoff. The nine year old drops a condition and should be tighter for his second go off the bench. He is 3 for 7 at nine furlongs and has run well on the inner (15-4-3-1) throughout his career. The capable barn and jock can both get off the skein here, as neither has won a race at the meet.

#6 Diamond District was a sharp winner last out at this level, beating three he faces again today. Since Contessa took over, the gelding has won both starts and has flirted with career tops in both victories. Looks well spotted brought back for a $25K tag.

AQU Race 8 Alw $—s (3:49 ET)
#6 Dr. W, #7 Stud Muffin

#6 Dr. W drops into an easier spot in his first go since November where the gelding checked in third versus Alw-3 optional claimers. The gelding is 3 for 7 on the inner and this guy was facing much tougher most of last year. The gelding is in a red hot barn with the main question mark being able to handle two turns off the bench.

#7 Stud Muffin was a sharp winner at this level last out and three he beat that day are back to take him on again today. This guy was winless in ’09 and 0 for 9 on the inner going into his last effort but was still sent off as the favorite. The price may end up on the light side again today, but the six year old did win last out as if he still had something left in reserve.

AQU Race 9 Clm $15,000N2L (4:18 ET)
#8 Fortune Faded, #5 Coaltown Legend, #9 Globemaster, #7 No Bloviating

#8 Fortune Faded stalked the early pace from the inside, angled out for the stretch drive and finished well, coming up on the wrong end of a three way photo, beaten a neck and a nose for the top spot. The racing strip was kind to speed that day and Ramon sticks for another go so we’ll give this guy another shot of picking up his first win since his maiden score, which was at today’s one mile distance.

#5 Coaltown Legend drops in for a tag after checking in fifth last out against state bred Alw-1 foes. Two back this guy made a good late run and was beaten just a head for the top spot. Cohen has not been great for our bankroll, but we have to look at this as a jock upgrade from Espinoza. This gelding needs to see some pace in front of him.

Price Plays:
These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
