Who Is the College Basketball Bets Favorite in Conference USA

March 8, 2011

It really is the most wonderful time of the year for anyone who enjoys placing College Basketball Bets.

Which teams could take home a tournament title in Conference USA? Let’s take a look.

UTEP (+175): As host of this tournament, is it any surprise that UTEP is a favorite in the College Basketball Bets? Not really, especially considering the Miners 23-9 record overall, including a 17-2 mark at home.

For UTEP everything ultimately starts with guard Randy Culpepper. The 6’0 senior is one of this league’s top scorers averaging 19.5 points per game, in addition to adding three rebounds and three assists a game as well. Culpepper has also scored at least 20 points in five of the Miners last six games. Guard Julyan Stone is a solid compliment for Culpepper, leading this team in both rebounds (7.4) and points (5.4).

UAB (+200): Next up in the College Basketball Bets are Mike Davis’ UAB Blazers. UAB finished as the regular season conference champions after going 12-4 in league play.

Simply put, the Blazers have the most underrated guard in the country, Aaron Johnson. The senior from Chicago is dynamic and explosive with the ball, and actually led the nation with 7.9 assists per game. Cameron Moore adds 14.5 points and 9.5 boards in the paint, with Jamarr Sanders averaging a team-high 17.8 points per game.

This is a senior led group that wants to get to the Big Dance in the worst way. Expect them to play the best basketball of their season in El Paso.

Tulsa (+350): At 18-12 overall and 11-5 league play, Tulsa knows that they’ll need to win this conference tournament to go dancing. But after winning eight of their last 10, they’re also the team that nobody wants to face off against in the College Basketball Bets.

On the court, the Golden Hurricane are a club that will only go as far as guard Justin Hurtt takes them. The senior from Missouri has been dynamic this year averaging 20 points per game, with 20 or more in six of his last eight. Forward Steven Idlet adds 12 points and 6.4 rebound as well.

And with wins over UTEP and UAB already this season, you know Tulsa won’t be afraid of anyone. They might be a true College Basketball Bets sleeper to consider here.

Southern Miss (+600): Finally, does Larry Eustachy’s club have what it takes to take home a College Basketball Bets title in El Paso? It won’t be easy, especially after losing three in a row.

Still going off at 6-1 odds, it is feasible, especially thanks to their star Gary Flowers. While Aaron Johnson, Randy Culpepper and others get a ton of love in Conference USA, Flowers has established himself as the best big man in this league. The 6’8 senior enters the Conference USA Tournament averaging 19 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, and has proven to be impossible to guard with one guy, as he’s got three double-doubles in his last six games.

Here are the rest of the College Basketball Bets to make in Conference USA:
