Weekend Pony Picks – Belmont Park Sunday Play

August 3, 2009

Horse Pick of the Day: Belmont Park – Race 7

Race-day: 7/19/2009

Race-time: 4:12 p m est.

Often times the best scores can be found in some of the cheaper races on a card. Hopefully, that will be the case this Sunday when fairly unsuccessful horses take to the Belmont Park inner turf for a $25,000 claiming race.

Horseplayers need to pay attention to the big races of the day as well as the not so big races. You never know where you’re going to find a profitable wager.

Let’s take a look at Race 7 at Belmont Park on Sunday.

Belmont Park – Race 7

Claiming $25,000 n2L

For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward Which Have Never Won Two Races

1 1/8th miles on inner turf

Hello Gold – - 7/2 fair online odds

The Belmont Park inner turf usually plays towards speed. In a $25,000 claimer where there isn’t a stand out, speed becomes even more important. Hello Gold doesn’t have the best speed ratings, but she does have the best style for the course and figures to get a nice lead in this before some of the others try to run her down. She could hang on for a very long time in this and might even cross the finish line first.

A.P. Light – - 4/1 fair online odds

The three year old daughter of Cape Canaveral ran one of the best races of her life in her last when losing by 7 ½ lengths at the $35,000 dollar level. She drops in class and figures to improve off of that effort. It might not be good enough to win but she will be closing and if Hello Gold doesn’t hang on for the victory, she might pick up the pieces.

Kitty’s Wish – - 5/1 fair online odds

She figures to get some play after breaking her maiden by 7 ¾ lengths in the slop in her last. Yes, she was very good in that race, but it was sloppy that day. Every time she’s stepped onto the turf, she hasn’t done as well, but because she is the only speed in this race after Hello’s Gold, she has to be taken seriously.

Wagering Strategy

I’m going to bet Hello Gold to win and place. I will put Hello Gold, Kitty’s Wish and A.P. Light into an exacta box. I will skip betting the trifecta in this race.
