Weekend Baseball Betting Odds – Padres vs Phillies
June 5, 2010
When the San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies get set to do battle in this weekend’s baseball betting odds, there’ll be one team looking to hold onto first place, and another team trying to overcome some offensive struggles. But before you place your bet, know that those two teams aren’t who you think they are.
San Diego Padres (32-21 SU, 32-21 R/L, 18-30-5 O/U) at Philadelphia Phillies (28-24 SU, 28-24 R/L, 22-29-1 O/U)
Saturday, June 5: 7:05 p.m.
San Diego:
(Jon Garland-R)
Philadelphia:
(Jamie Moyer-L)
That’s right, it’s the San Diego Padres who find themselves in first place in the NL West heading into this weekend. And Saturday night’s starter is one of the biggest reasons why.
Jon Garland will take the bump for the Padres, and is in the midst of a career renaissance at Petco Park. The 30-year-old is having a season to remember after bouncing around between four teams since 2007. In San Diego he’s thrived, the key to one of the best staff’s in baseball. Garland’s record currently stands at 6-2, but it’s his 2.15 ERA that’s all the buzz for the Padres. The righty hasn’t given up more than two earned runs in his last nine starts.
Garland will be going against a Philadelphia Phillies lineup that’s simply struggling to score runs. Coming into this weekend’s betting odds, the Phillies have lost seven of their last nine games. Even worse, for a team known for having All-Stars like Ryan Howard and Chase Utley in their lineup, their offense is non-existent. The Phillies haven’t scored more than three runs in any of their last 12 games, and have been shut out five times in that span. Ouch!
The pitcher with the task of keeping this game close is Jamie Moyer. Moyer is a veteran in the truest sense of the word, as at the age of 47 is still pitching effectively in Philadelphia. He’s 5-5 with a 4.26 ERA and has struggled at times, but again, remember…the guy is 47!!! He had one of his best outings of the season last weekend in a 1-0 loss.
As for the San Diego offense, it all centers around one man. Slugging first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez is a superstar in every way possible, already belting 10 home runs and driving in 38 on the young season. One of his biggest hits came in one of the Padres most recent games, when he hit a walk-off grand slam to beat the Mets on Wednesday.
So as we head into the weekend’s betting odds and the Phillies continue to struggle, should the Padres be your baseball wager? In this game yes.
The truth is, that eventually Philadelphia is going to turn it around, and when they do, watch out. They’re simply too good to be this bad offensively, and will figure out a way to put some runs across the board. Just not against Garland.
Expect the San Diego righty to have another strong outing, making his team, and you a winner in Saturday’s baseball bets.
