Week 6 NCAAF Odds – Temple Owls vs. Northern Illinois Huskies

October 9, 2010

The Temple Owls are getting a lot of attention this weekend when they face the Northern Illinois Huskies in Week 6 NCAAF odds. Their only loss is against the previously ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, and Temple’s somewhat easy schedule makes them a team sharps are rightfully tracking. Can they overcome the Week 6 NCAAF odds as road dogs against the Huskies?

A nice 13-3 SU record in their past 16 games, and their presence in the MAC, have made Temple a team to watch. They’ve improved mightily on the road after being brutal for so long. In their last 25 games they’re just 8-17 SU away from home, but are 5-2 SU in their 7 most recent road games.

What’s going to make Temple a great team against tight numbers is that they have a powerful rushing attack. Matt Brown, the backup running back for Temple, rushed for 226 yards and 4 touchdowns against Army last weekend, which has made the Owls a cagey Week 6 NCAAF odds buster this weekend. He replaced Bernard Pierce, who didn’t travel with the team, but has 343 yards and 4 touchdowns of his own through four games.

Week 6 NCAAF Odds: Northern Illinois -3.0 (49.5)

When Pierce returns from a high ankle sprain (an injury that typically takes 2-4 weeks to heal), everyone will be looking to stuff the run against Temple. For now, that might be a problem for the Huskies considering they’ve allowed 150.0 rushing yards per game thus far.

Still, Northern Illinois isn’t going to lay down in the Week 6 NCAAF odds just because Temple is gaining steam. They’re 3-2 SU this season with a 3-1 ATS record. In fact, they’ve cleared the NCAAF odds in their past three games.

The Huskies have had to travel in four of those games, but at home they’re a reliable team at 5-0 SU in their past 5 home games. This team will rarely pass the ball because their rushing attack is incredibly strong. They rank 12th in the nation with 241.6 yards rushing.

The problem for Northern Illinois in the Week 6 NCAAF odds, however, is that their rushing defense isn’t that great. Temple may have given up 235 yards on the ground against Army, one of the more difficult rushing attacks to stifle, but they held on in the red-zone by giving up just 24-points against.

Temple’s rushing attack is going to get all the attention, but their defense is being sold down the river. They have a good one, and the Owls are going to be a worthy bet in tight games like this one. Don’t be fooled by the Week 6 odds – they’re only being listed as dogs because they’re away from home.
