Week 6 Betting College Football Success – San Diego State

October 9, 2010

Betting college football success this Saturday requires a wager on the San Diego State Aztecs to cover the spread versus BYU.

San Diego State is 3 and 1 straight up and a 5-point road favorite versus the home team BYU Cougars this Saturday. Most football handicappers believe that this game is a toss up ATS as only 50% of them feel that San Diego State will cover the spread.

But the Aztecs are 4 and 0 ATS this season and should probably be 4 and 0 straight up as well after losing 24 to 27 to Missouri as 14-point dogs on Sept. 18th. Does BYU have any shot against the spread in this game?

NCAAF Betting Lines

San Diego State Aztecs -5 -110

BYU Cougars +5 -110

The betting college football trends definitely support the Aztecs in this game.

  • The San Diego State Aztecs are 5 and 1 ATS in their last 6 games on the road.
  • The San Diego State Aztecs are 5 and 0 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
  • The BYU Cougars are 1 and 9 ATS in their last 10 games in October.
  • The BYU Cougars are 0 and 4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.

San Diego State may not be a popular betting college football team but they sure are a profitable one and to me that’s the key in this game.

The Aztecs have covered in all 4 games this season because they’re simply a good team. They beat Nicholls State 47 to 0 as 32-point favorites, New Mexico State 41 to 21 as 13 ½ point favorites and Utah State 41 to 7 as 9 ½ point favorites.

They’ve dominated in every game they’ve played except for the 3-point loss to Missouri as 14 ½ point dogs. I feel that’s incredibly impressive because compared to the team that they’re favored against, well, there really isn’t a comparison.

BYU just isn’t as good in 2010 as they usually are. The team that upset the Top 5 ranked Oklahoma Sooners in 2009 is very different this year. BYU is 1 and 4 ATS this season. The main reason for their horrible record against the betting college football spread is the fact that they are highly regarded even though they only score 15 points per game.

That’s just not going to cut it in the wild and wacky Mountain West Conference where TCU, Air Force, and Utah reside. San Diego State, who averages 38.3 points per game, resides in the conference as well.

I just don’t see how the Cougars are going to keep pace with the Aztecs on Saturday. BYU has lost 4 games in a row and has given up 35 points to Air Force, 34 to Florida State, 27 to Nevada and 31 to Utah in those last 4 losses. The Cougars haven’t scored more than 23 points in any single game this season.

They don’t have the offense to keep pace with San Diego State and they don’t have the defense to keep San Diego State from racking up points against them. Betting college football profits appear to be only a click away in the sportsbook.
