Week 4 NCAAF Odds Buster – Mississippi Rebels Host Fresno State

September 25, 2010

Following a brutal loss to Vanderbilt, the Mississippi Rebels are slim favorites at home against sneaky Fresno State in Week 4 NCAAF odds. Jeremiah Masoli was supposed to be a cure-all for the Mississippi Rebels when he arrived via exile from Oregon, but now the team and coaches are finding out exactly why Masoli’s former school had no problem letting him go. If Masoli can’t lead the Rebels over Fresno State this weekend, he may find himself firmly planted on the bench.

It’s hard to gauge the metrics on either team, since their conferences are so far apart in talent. Fresno State has gone 4-1 SU in their last 5 games overall and are now 9-2 SU in their last 11 games overall. Right now they sit atop the WAC standings, which will be righted once Boise State starts tearing up the pitiful excuse for a conference.

Which is the exact opposite place that Mississippi finds itself within the SEC as we enter the Week 4 NCAAF odds. The Rebels are just 1-2 SU (0-1 against SEC) and are tied for dead last in the SEC West.

There are two reasons to be hopeful for Mississippi this weekend. First, they’re 9-3 SU in their last 12 games at home. The second is that their -0.3 point differential shows that their offense is somewhat capable of matching opponent production. You really just have to figure out how good Fresno State is, and whether or not they can beat an SEC team.

Week 4 NCAAF Odds: Mississippi -2.5 (54)

The guy who’s leading Fresno State’s charge this year is A.J. Ellis, a beast of a tailback who ripped open Utah State for 165-yards and 2 touchdowns last weekend in a 41-24 romp. Ellis now has was very quiet in his first game, but now poses a big threat to the Week 4 NCAAF odds, especially since a stout rushing attack is what doomed Mississippi last weekend.

The Rebels gave up 227 rushing yards on 41 carries against Vanderbilt, along with 3 rushing touchdowns. That’s a 5.5 yards per carry average for those of you without a calculator. Making matters worse is that they gave up those yards at home.

You’d think that Masoli could pull his head out of the sand long enough to stay steady, but he’s already thrown 4 interceptions in just three games this year. So far, he has yet to score a passing touchdown at home in two tries and I don’t like his chances against the Week 4 NCCAF odds, especially with Fresno State giving up just 139.5 passing yards thus far. Sure, those have been against bad teams, but it’s not like Masoli is offering any hint of encouragement.
