Use the Woodward in a Dynamite Horse Racing Pick 4 Bet at Saratoga

September 4, 2010

The Woodward Stakes, where top-rated horse Quality Road runs, is part of a terrific horse racing Pick 4 bet at Saratoga on Saturday.

The late Pick 4 at Saratoga figures to provide tons of dollars to those lucky enough to hit it if either Vineyard Haven in the Grade I Forego, or Quality Road in the Grade I Woodward is upset.  I’ve created a ticket that I believe has a good chance to hit on Saturday.

1 1/16th miles over turf

Horses Used: 2-Midnight Billy, 4-Bishop of Nola, 5-Duke of Naples, 6-J L Bernstein, 10-Saginaw

Analysis:  I believe that Midnight Billy has a big shot at winning this race at 15/1 morning line odds.  Billy has run big enough speed numbers to contend in this and there is a ton of speed to set up his closing kick.  Bishop of Nola figures to provide some of that speed.  The likely chalk is a must use on any horse racing Pick 4 bet tickets.  Duke of Naples failed over the yielding turf in his last but has every right to bounce back at overlaid odds.  J L Bernstein is another closer with a shot to win if the pace is as fast as expected.

Race 9 (Leg 2)

Forego Stakes (Grade I)

Purse $250,000. For Three-Year-Olds And Upward.

7 furlongs over dirt

Horses Used: 2-Bribon, 3-Big Drama, 4-Here Comes Ben, 8-Warrior’s Reward

Analysis:  Bribon has won 10 out of 34 and gets an extra furlong to work with after finishing 3rd in the Grade I A.G. Vanderbilt Handicap in his last.  Big Drama finished 2nd in the Vanderbilt and should be able to run past chalk Vineyard Haven, who doesn’t have the same speed as Majesticperfection, the winner of the Vanderbilt, on Saturday if he’s not too tired.  Here Comes Ben has 3 victories and 1 second place finish out of 4 races at the 7 furlong distance.  Warrior’s Reward enters this off of a min-vacation.  The Grade I winner should get the perfect set up for his brilliant closing kick.

Race 10 (Leg 3)

Woodward Stakes (Grade I)

Purse $750,000. For Three-Year-Olds And Upward.

1 1/8th miles over dirt

Horses Used: 3-Quality Road, 6-Tranquil Manner

Analysis:  Super chalk Quality Road is a must use on any horse racing Pick 4 bet ticket.  He’s the fastest horse in the Grade I Woodward and he’s one of the highest-rated horses in the world.  Tranquil Manner could run down Quality Road ala Persistently running down Rachel Alexandra in this if one or two horses really pressure Quality Road early.  Tranquil Manner’s 15/1 morning line odds make him an attractive horse to use in the Pick 4.

Race 11 (Leg 3)

Maiden Special Weight

Purse $41,000. For Maidens, Three-Years-Old And Upward Foaled In New York State And Approved By The New York State-Bred Registry.

1 mile over the inner turf

Horses Used: 5-Bourbon Bandit, 7-Writethatdown, 10-City Train

Analysis:  Bourbon Bandit goes first time for 23% winning debut turf trainer Linda Rice.  Bandit debuts with Lasix and could just be better than the rest of this field.  Writethatdown picks up jockey Garrett Gomez and has a 2nd and a 3rd in two lifetime races over the grass.  He could improve enough to win this.  City Train has no excuses on Saturday.  The son of Slew City Slew should take the lead in this and then run off with the victory.  Trainer Gary Contessa is winning at a 4% clip at the meet, however, and City Train is 0 for 8 in his career.  He’s still a must use, though, because he might be the only speed in this race.

5 x 4 x 2 x 3  = 120 combinations

$1 Pick 4 = $120

Good luck!
