UFC Lightweight Title Betting – Penn vs. Edgar At UFC 112

April 7, 2010

The question in the lightweight division has always been, “Can anyone beat B.J. Penn?” So far we haven’t found a contender who can, and UFC 112 betting lines aren’t giving Frankie Edgar that much of a chance. At +450 against Penn’s -700, Edgar may be known as “The Answer” on paper, but he won’t be able to solve Penn’s recent burst of ferocity.

That’s tough for me to say because I like Frankie Edgar as a fighter. At 11-1 SU, with a unanimous decision loss to Gray Maynard two years now behind him, Edgar is simply an entertaining fighter. He certainly has the power to catch you on the chin, and his wrestling is strong enough to at least give Penn some trouble. The word that would typify Edgar’s style is “scrappy”. He doesn’t finish guys off easily, but he can certainly last a lifetime in the ring using a stiff gameplan and very good conditioning.

Most UFC betting enthusiasts think that Edgar doesn’t stand a chance in the octagon with Penn, and at this point in Penn’s career it’s hard to argue any other way. After being tooled by GSP over a year ago, Penn has gone on a rampage in the lightweight division.

Kenny Florian had a all the right momentum going in to that fight, but Penn was able to catch him in a rear naked choke. The hype surrounding the unique Diego Sanchez came to a screeching halt when Sanchez was forced into a TKO after Penn had forced so much blood from Sanchez’s body that he couldn’t see anymore.

This is a clear cut fight between an experienced and relentless champion fighting a challenger who is simply not read to wear the belt yet. Edgar is only 28-years old and he’s making tons of progress in the division. The fact is that he doesn’t deserve to be in this fight, and the only reason he became the number-one contender is because the Maynard-Diaz fight wasn’t enough to put either of those contenders in the ring with Penn.

As an Edgar backer I would love to push him as a heavy dog with plenty of bite when I bet on UFC 112 this weekend. But I can’t. Penn has reformed into a positively brutal monster in the lightweight division, and until there is a challenger who is able to build some real steam by vanquishing a steadily packed division, Penn is as good as they get in championship betting when UFC 112 unfolds in Abu Dhabi.

In fact, while they should be entertaining, the top three fights should truly belong to the favorites in the BetOnline sportsbook. For a value-added play, I would parlay Penn over Edgar, Silva over Maia and Hughes over Gracie.

BetOnline is the only sportsbook that allows you to parlay MMA, so take advantage now! These are easy wins for you, and $100 pays $60. That’s $60 more than you had before the fights started! And no workload for it!

Remember that UFC 112 is live at 1 p.m. EST time this Saturday!
