U.S. Open – Els is a Bet Against in the Top Rest of the World Category

June 16, 2010

Ernie Els is the favorite in the Top Rest of the World category to win this week’s U.S. Open Golf Championship.

Ernie has won 2 tournaments already on the PGA Tour and has done well at Pebble Beach in the past.

It makes sense that the golf odds makers would make Ernie the Top Rest of the World favorite to win this year’s U.S. Open, but I’m not sold on him.

In fact, I believe that he’s a serious play against.

U.S. Open Golf Championship

  • Where: Pebble Beach Resort, Pebble Beach, CA
  • When: June 17th thru June 20th
  • TV: ESPN/NBC

Top Rest of the World

Best Golf Bet A: Retief Goosen +800

Goosen’s done well enough on the PGA Tour this year to be considered one of the best wagers in the sportsbook to beat the “rest of the world” golfers at the U.S. Open this week. Retief finished 5th at the WGC-Accenture, 4th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and is coming off of a nice 15th place finish at the St. Jude Classic.

Goosen has won 2 U.S. Open Golf Championships, in 2001 and 2004, and, remember, he doesn’t have to beat guys named Tiger, Westwood, Lefty and McIlroy in order for gamblers to cash after betting on him.

Best Golf Bet B: Robert Allenby +1500

At one time this year, Allenby was ranked #1 all around on the PGA Tour. He’s played extremely well at certain times during 2010, but he hasn’t been able to lock up a victory yet. He also had to withdraw from last week’s St. Jude Classic and he missed the cut at the Memorial Tournament.

Does the withdraw bother me? Not really. Robert Allenby is a fighter. He just couldn’t fight against the flu last week. He should be ready to go this week. I expect a terrific showing from Allenby this week.

Worst Golf Wager: Ernie Els +500

Oh, yes, I know that Ernie could come up huge and bite me, but I doubt it. That 3rd place finish at the Valero Texas Open was okay, but did you see that field? This field is obviously much tougher and the golf odds on Ernie are just too low for my tastes.

I’ll bet on someone with more of a price in the Top Rest of the World category.

Best Underdog Golf Bet: Thongchai Jaidee +3000

The Thai Super Man of golf withdrew from the Masters and missed the cut at The Players Championship but his 19th place finish at the Memorial Tournament wasn’t all that bad. He also finished 8th at the Volvo China Open, 9th at the Ballantine’s Championship, and 13th at the BMW PGA Championship on the European Tour earlier this year.

Yes, he’s an underdog in this category but he’s a +3000 underdog with a shot.

Others To Consider

Geoff Ogilvy +1000 – - Ogilvy’s going to have to improve off of that 41st place finish at the Memorial in his last, but he can do it.

Tim Clark +1400 – - The sportsbook is offering square odds on The Players Championship winner to just beat the other “rest of the world” golfers.

Charl Schwartzel +2000 – - He’s missed the cut at his last 2 PGA Tour events but when he’s on, he’s on. Schwartzel finished 2nd at the WGC-CA earlier this year.

It’s U.S. Open Week! Log onto the golf sportsbook and bet the U.S. Open!
