Top Four Horse Race Betting Choices for the Woodbine Mile
September 19, 2010
The Woodbine Mile has historically been one of the most contentious races of the year. Finding the winning horse race betting choice has been almost impossible to do in many years.
This year’s Woodbine Mile, which will be run this Sunday on Sept. 19 th, figures to be one of those contentious races. Taking short odds on any horse in the stellar field is not the way to cash a ticket on Sunday.

First Choice: Straight Story 12/1
When it comes to horse race betting odds, there isn’t a better equine on which to wager in the Woodbine Mile than Straight Story. The Giant’s Causeway colt stumbled in his last, recovered, and then went on for victory. Two races back, he actually tracked the speed before making a move and ended up finishing second. That race was the Grade I United Nations and, considering the fractions involved in that race, any horse that finished in the Top 4 has to be taken seriously in their next race. Straight Story is in terrific form and has the tractability needed to win the Woodbine Mile on Sunday. He can lie off of it or go for the lead early. If he stays anywhere close to the 12/1 odds, he’s a huge overlay to win this.
Second Choice: Smokey Fire 15/1
Before laughing at me, and I don’t mind if you do, take a look at Smokey Fire’s past performances. Out of 11 lifetime races, the horse has won 6 of them with 3 second place finishes and a third place finish. That’s 10 out of 11 in the money, man! The only time the five-year-old gelding didn’t hit the board was when it ran over the dirt at Saratoga in August. So, Smokey Fire doesn’t like dirt. Who cares? This is a turf race. The Grade II winner is supremely tractable like Straight Story, has been working fantastic over the course, and could get an awesome trip. Bet with confidence.
Third Choice: Famous Name 6/1
Juddmonte Farms and trainer Dermot Weld send this five-year-old Dansili colt from Leopardstown in Ireland over to Woodbine for the Mile on Sunday. Famous Name has won 9 out of 19 races and is Grade I placed. The horse also has a running line of 5-1-1 out of 7 races at a mile. Famous Name is a flat-out winner but that’s one of the reasons that I’m picking it third instead of first or second. The field for the Woodbine Mile is incredibly deep meaning that taking short horse race betting odds on any equine to win in this thing isn’t smart. I have the feeling that Famous Name is going to get bet down to either second or third choice status in this. At 6/1, he’s worth a play. At anything else, I have to pass on betting on him to win.
Fourth Choice: The Usual Q.T. 3/1
There are a couple of reasons to like the The Usual Q.T. in this and a couple of reasons not to like The Usual Q.T. in this. The reasons to like the horse is the fact that The Usual Q.T. is probably the most talented horse in this field, a Grade I winner, and is 5 for 5 at the mile distance. The reasons not to like The Usual Q.T. is that the horse is coming off of a horrible run in the Pacific Classic, failed in its only attempt outside of California, and will be going off at low odds against the toughest field its ever faced. Your call on betting on this guy to win, friends.
Wagering Strategy
I like Straight Story and Smokey Fire. I will bet on both to win if both are going off at double-digit odds. I will bet an exacta box with Straight Story and Smokey Fire. I will also bet an exacta keying Straight Story and Smokey Fire over Famous Name, The Usual Q.T., Victory’s Cry and Grand Adventure.
Finally, I will bet a trifecta with Straight Story, Smokey Fire, with Straight Story, Smokey Fire, Famous Name, The Usual Q.T., with Straight Story, Smokey Fire, The Usual Q.T., Famous Name, Victory’s Cry, Grand Adventure.
Good luck!
