Tigers Look G-r-r-r-r-e-a-t – Detroit vs. LA Angels

April 24, 2009

Jackson and Tigers Look G-r-r-r-r-e-a-t Against Angels, Rookie Hurler, Tonight

The Detroit Tigers (8-6 SU, 8-6 RL, 6-7-1 O/U) and the Los Angeles Angels (5-9 SU, 5-9 RL, 8-5-1 O/U) will both be trying to pick up an SU and ATS victory in the BetOnline Sportsbook when they meet at Angel Stadium tonight at 10 PM ET.

The Tigers scored five runs in a seventh-inning rally to defeat the Angels 12-10 in a high-scoring affair on Wednesday. Detroit won the game as a -200 road underdog while the 22 combined runs played well Over the 8.5-run O/U total.

Curtis Granderson went 3-for-4 with a solo home run while Magglio Ordonez added two RBI as Juan Rincon recorded the win after tossing an inning of relief.

Kendry Morales blasted a three-run homer and drove in five runs for the Angels as starter Scot Shields suffered the loss after allowing four runs on two hits.

Right-hander Edwin Jackson (1-0, 2.14 ERA) will take the ball tonight after pitching 7.2 innings in Detroit’s 2-0 win over Seattle on Saturday despite suffering from flu-like symptoms.

The Angels will counter with right-hander Matt Palmer (0-0, 0.00 ERA) who will be called up from Triple-A Salt Lake to make his Angels debut.

Palmer had an 8.53 ERA in three starts for San Francisco last year, and has allowed 10 runs in 7.2 innings in the minors to start this season.

Here is a look at tonight’s key MLB betting trends, followed by my in-depth analysis and MLB Free Pick.

The Tigers are 4-0 in their last 4 after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.

The Tigers are 4-0 in their last 4 during game 3 of a series.

The Angels are 6-0 in their last 6 games as a home underdog.

The Angels are 15-6 in their last 21 after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.

The Under is 8-2-1 in the last 11 meetings.

The Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Los Angeles.

The Tigers are 17-44 in the last 61 meetings.

The Tigers are 8-26 in the last 34 meetings in Los Angeles.

MLB Odds

Detroit Tigers -1½ +110

Edwin Jackson –R -145

Los Angeles Angels +1½ -130

Matt Palmer –R +125

Over 9½ -110

Under 9½ -110

Analysis: The Angels are struggling mightily at the moment while the Tigers seem to be playing loose and free following an horrific 2008 season.

The Tigers have gone 3-1 in their last four ballgames while the Angels are just 1-4 SU in their last five overall.

With a solid veteran starter taking the hill and coming off a solid performance – not to mention facing a rookie hurler making his Angels debut, I like the Detroit Tigers to win and cover the Run Line in this contest.

MLB Free Picks: Tigers -1½ Runs/Over 9½ Runs
