Thursday’s Horse Picks from Arlington Park

June 4, 2009

Arlington Park is back on Thursday with a full 10 race card.

Racebook fans need to keep themselves sharp. The best way to do that is to not pigeonhole oneself and only bet races at certain tracks. By looking at numerous tracks, horseplayers can also find the best overlays on any given race day throughout the United States.

Let’s take a look at race 9 at Arlington Park on Thursday.

Arlington – Race 9

Optional Claiming $62,500 n$y

For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward Which Have Never Won $11,700 Three Times Lifetime or Twice in 2008/2009 Other Than Maiden, Claiming, Starter or State Bred or Have Never Won Four Races or Claiming Price $62,500

1 1/16th miles on turf

Sun For Fun – - 5/1 morning line

Out of 8 lifetime races on the grass, Sun For Fun has a record of 3-2-3. That means that, if anything, she excels on the lawn. She’s compiled the excellent turf record by both chasing a fast pace, closing into a fast pace, or running on the lead. That makes her a versatile type in a race that should cater towards front runners. She’s also won her last two races with different styles. Sun For Fun might be a surprise package in the 9th on Thursday.

Positively Charming – - 8/1 morning line

This $600,000 buy out of Pulpit just hasn’t panned out as a winner, but now she finds herself in a small field against very little other speed. If she’s going to really show something, it will be this race because she gets the rail, stretches out to a distance more to her liking, and nobody should challenge her on the front end. She should be desperately trying to hang on near the finish line with Sun For Fun running at her.

Creative Design – - 6/1 morning line

Creative Design goes into this optional claimer off of a fantastic work on May 26th. She could challenge Positively Charming early but most likely will lay 2 or 3 lengths off. The key, of course, is how fast Positively Charming decides to go on the front end. If she can stay close to Positively Charming through a slow half mile and then turn it on at the top of the stretch, she could be tough to beat. She too has a shot in this.

Wagering Strategy

I like Sun For Fun in this and will bet her to win and place. The pace setup says she’s the logical choice. I will also put Sun For Fun, Creative Design and Positively Charming into an exacta and trifecta box. I’ll be leaving the 4/5 chalk in this race, Ciao, out of all of my bets as she has one style of running, closing from the clouds.
