Thursday Afternoon Betting at Belmont Park

September 16, 2010

There is no better way to spend a Thursday afternoon than firing up the wagering account and getting in some action playing the ponies, and Belmont Park has obliged with a good nine race card.

The play of the day is a second level optional claiming race, with the European import Moving Heart making her second start since coming to the U.S.

She is trained by top turf trainer Christophe Clement and her 5/1 morning line odds look more than fair.

Our Late Pick 3 play today involves three races on the grass, and we need to hope the late afternoon showers that are in the forecast hold off, as the trio of races are each outstanding horse betting races.

There are no real bombs in the three-race sequence, but it appears we can bet all three likely favorites, which could lead to a solid profit with our $24 investment.

Today’s Play of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 4 OClm $50,000N2X (2:35 ET)
#5 Moving Heart 5/1
#8 Whisked Away 3/1
#2 Consequence 6/1
#1 Darjeeling 6/1

Analysis: #5 Moving Heart made her U.S. debut at Gulfstream Park back in April, beating Alw-1 foes off nearly a six-month break. Now she comes back off a five-month layoff here for the Clement barn that is 17% winners with horses coming back off a 61-180 day layoff. It is tough to tell just how good this gal might be, but her half brother Casual Conquest ($1.2 million) is a Group 1 winner. Leparoux takes the call and we should catch a fair price.

#8 Whisked Away is making her first start since last October for the Mott barn that is 23% winners with horses coming back off a +180 day layoff. The filly beat Alw-1 foes in her first go against winners and was a solid third in her first try at today’s level. She sports a couple of quick works on the morning tab.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 7/2 or better.

Today’s Horse Pick 3 Play from Belmont Park:

Starting in Race 7: $1: 2,4,7 / 4,5,7,9 / 1,7 = $24

BEL Race 7 OClm $25,000N2X (4:11 ET)
#7 Who Is Lady, #2 Starjetta, #4 Chorus Music

#7 Who Is Lady is one of five in here that has not been seen since July. This gal was fourth last out after a troubled trip in her first try at this level. She was brushed by a rival then had to check when shut off in deep stretch, ending up beaten 1 3/4 lengths for the top spot. She has done some of her best running over the grass here (11-2-4-0). The low profile barn has had a strong year so far, hitting at a 23% clip.

#2 Starjetta came up the inside and rallied well to beat state bred Alw-1 foes last out over a yielding turf during the opening week of the Spa meeting. The third place finisher in the race was Frivolous Buck, who came back to beat state bred Alw-1 foes in her next outing on Sept. 6. The three-year-old filly steps into a tougher spot but she has landed in the exacta in six of her seven starts and in just her third start since April may still have some room for improvement.

BEL Race 8 OClm $35,000N1X (4:43 ET)
#7 Elusive Jozi, #4 Margarita Friday, #5 Royal Fortune, #9 Settling Seas

#7 Elusive Jozi came with a five wide rally to finish fourth last out going 5 1/2 furlongs in her turf debut. She was coming back off a 2 1/2 month break and was only beaten 1 3/4 lengths for the top spot. Blinkers are added to the mix and she may like the extra ground here on the stretch out to seven panels.

#4 Margarita Friday was bumped coming out of the gate, saved ground much of the trip and finished evenly for third in her first go against winners. The runner up in the race was Bella d’Oro, who came back to beat Alw-1 company in her next start last Saturday at Monmouth Park. She looks as if she is heading in the right direction for the Brown barn that is coming off a strong Spa meeting.

BEL Race 9 Clm $20,000B (5:15 ET)
#7 Man of Danger, #1 Close to the Vest

#7 Man of Danger exits a third place finish versus $7.5K foes on the main track at Monmouth Park. Two back in his last go on turf he prompted the early pace and faded weakened to finish fifth against $40K claimers. The gelding has landed in the exacta in half of his 10 starts on the turf and while he steps back up into a tougher spot, he may be overlooked on the tote. He fits here with his best.

#1 Close to the Vest set the early fractions and weakened to finish third in a race taken off the turf in the slop at the Spa. The gelding is three for six on turf and should be tighter for his second start off a ten-month layoff.
