The NCAA Football Line on Maryland vs. Clemson Say the Tigers Squash the Terps

October 16, 2010

The NCAA football line on Maryland vs. Clemson pretty much tells football handicappers that the Terps have no chance versus the Tigers on Saturday, Oct. 16th.

Maryland is a big time +15 ½ point dog versus Clemson on Saturday.  That’s a lot of points to give up to a 4 and 1 team that is coming off of 2 straight victories.  Are the NCAA football line odds makers correct with the line, or are the Terps an overlay wager in the sports book?

NCAA Football Betting Lines

Maryland Terrapins                 +15 ½ -110

Clemson Tigers                       -15 ½ -110

The NCAA football line trends favor the Terrapins in this game.

  • The Maryland Terrapins are 8 and 2 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.
  • The Maryland Terrapins are 5 and 1 ATS in their last 6 games on grass.
  • The Maryland Terrapins are 6 and 1 ATS in their last 7 games as an underdog on the road of 10 ½ points or greater.
  • The Clemson Tigers are 1 and 5 ATS in their last 6 games at home.

Clemson is 2 and 3 on the season.  They’ve lost 3 games in a row since beating North Texas 35 to 10 and Presbyterian 58 to 21.  The problem is that even though Clemson is 2 and 3, they are only 1 and 4 against the spread.

I’m confused as to why they are such huge favorites in the NCAA football line sports book versus the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday.  I don’t understand where the odds makers are getting the 15 ½ points.  Yes, the Tigers almost beat Auburn in a 24 to 27 loss as 7 ½ point faves, but that was 3 weeks ago.  Since then, the Miami Hurricanes, who proved to be an overrated bunch of saps by getting manhandled by Florida State 45 to 17 last Saturday, beat Clemson 30 to 21.

Then, in what many considered a shocker, North Carolina, with a bunch of players suspended or kicked off of the team, beat Clemson 21 to 16.  Clemson was a 3 ½ point dog versus Miami and a 2 ½ point dog versus North Carolina.  The Tigers failed to cover a 27 ½ point spread versus North Texas and a 44 point spread versus Presbyterian.

Now, they’re favored by 15 ½ over Maryland.  I’m not sure if Clemson Tigers is a very good team.  They played a great game versus Auburn but I’m not sure if they’re all that good.  The Tigers haven’t impressed in 2 straight weeks while Maryland, although playing versus much weaker opponents, have won.

The Terrapins may not have a good reputation but they have been playing solid football in 2010.  The NCAA football line on this game should be Clemson -8 ½ to maybe -12, but giving the Terps 15 ½ points to start the game makes no sense whatsoever.  Maryland averages 32 points a game.  They give up less than 19 points per game.  They played West Virginia tough on the road, although the game ended up being their lone non-cover in the 17 to 31 loss as 10-point dogs, and beat Navy straight up as a 6 ½ point dog.

Maryland is no joke.  Although QB Jamarr Robinson is listed as probably for Saturday’s game, he no doubt will play.  That means that Maryland has a shot to not only keep the game within the NCAA football line, but to also upset Clemson straight up.

I’m backing Maryland in the sports book.
