Texas Must Prevent Bounce as 3 TD Sports Betting Fave vs. Iowa State

October 23, 2010

The #22 Texas Longhorns, fresh off of ending rival Nebraska’s BCS Championship dreams, must prevent a “bounce” as the huge sports betting fave in their game against Iowa State this Saturday.

The Longhorns are a 20 ½ point favorite to put a serious whipping onto the overmatched Iowa State Cyclones, but Texas hasn’t been that great against the spread in 2010 and sometimes a team underperforms in their game following an upset victory.

Will Texas do that or will they cover the sports betting spread in their game versus the Cyclones?

NCAAF Betting Lines

Iowa State Cyclones               +20 ½ -110      O 48 -110

Texas Longhorns                     -20 ½ -110       U 48 -110

The sports betting trends favor neither team against the spread in this game.

  • The Iowa State Cyclones are 2 and 8 ATS in their last 8 games on field turf.
  • The Iowa State Cyclones are 1 and 4 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog.
  • The Texas Longhorns are 2 and 7 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
  • The Texas Longhorns are 1 and 5 ATS in their last 6 games as the favorite.

Sports betting wise, there are few teams in college football that deserve to be shunned from covering a spread more than the Texas Longhorns.  Before upsetting Nebraska as 10-point dogs last Saturday, the Texas Longhorns had covered only 1 other spread in 2010.

That cover occurred in their game versus the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Longhorns were only 3-point road favorites in that game and managed to beat Texas Tech 24 to 14, but in the rest of their other games in 2010, the ‘Horns have been sports betting coverage pariahs, failing to cover a 31-point spread in a victory over Rice, a 27 ½ point spread in a victory over Wyoming and a 15 ½ point spread as a straight up loser to UCLA.

Now, because of the upset over the ‘Huskers, football handicappers are expected to jump all over the Longhorns as a close to 3 touchdown favorite versus Iowa State?

I suppose so.  I can’t do it, though.  I can’t endorse Texas at those sports betting odds against a team like Iowa State.  Yes, I am aware that the Cyclones were shut out in their last game, a 0 to 52 loss to Oklahoma as 23-point dogs, but before that, Iowa State had proven worthy of being a less than 20-point dog against a team like Texas.

The Cyclones put up 27 points against Utah and although they failed to cover, the Utes were grossly underestimated by sports betting odds makers in that game.  Iowa State actually beat Texas Tech 52 to 38 as 6 ½ point home dogs.  They also hung with Kansas State on the road in a 20 to 27 loss.

Texas is the better team, obviously, but they might suffer a bit of a let down after stomping all over Nebraska last Saturday.  I can’t back the Longhorns at what I believe are exaggerated sports betting odds ATS in this game.

I’m going with Iowa State to keep this game within the number.
