Tennessee Volunteers: Betting Against Them Would be Foolish
September 8, 2009
NCAA Preview: Tennessee Volunteers
Sometimes, a gambler can look at everything, study everything, and suddenly realize that the experts are wrong. Such is the case with the experts regarding the Tennessee Volunteers? How wrong? Wrong enough I believe for bettors to be able to take advantage for most of this college football season.
Take a look at every single so called magazine and website that purports to offer expert football picks and one things is certain, the Tennessee Volunteers aren’t going to be good this year. It’s going to take Lane Kiffin a while to understand the college game. It’s going to take Lane Kiffin a while to recruit his players. Tennessee won’t bounce back from one of their worst seasons in recent memory. They can’t.
Even now the so called websites that offer expert football picks no doubt are making excuses, on the negative, for why the Tennessee Volunteers won’t take that incredible 63 point performance against Western Kentucky this past Saturday into their game against the UCLA Bruins this upcoming Saturday.
I’m here to say that all of that talk is ridiculous. Tennessee will be a force in the SEC this year and they will be a force this week against the UCLA Bruins. How do I know this?
Because of one word – - defense. Forge the fact that Tennessee scored 63 points. What that mean is that Lane Kiffin’s offensive schemes, which come from a pro system that he developed while coaching the Oakland Raiders, has taken effect. That was to be expected. Coaching offense in college football is actually easier, if you have a solid offensive line to work with, then coaching defense. I know this because we’ve seen this before when Charlie Weiss went to Notre Dame that first year. With a solid offensive line to work with, Weiss’s system was easy to institute.
Such is the case with Lane Kiffin at Tennessee. That’s not the reason that the so called websites that offer expert football picks were wrong about Tennessee and will be wrong about Tennessee in the future, particularly when they face the Florida Gators. The reason that the experts will be wrong is because of the Tennessee defense.
Who coaches Tennessee’s defense? Why one of the architects of the famed Tampa 2, also known as the Cover 2, defense that is en vogue in the NFL right now. That would be Lanes’ daddy, Monte Kiffin. With Monte Kiffin calling the defensive plays and Lane Kiffin calling the offensive plays, or at least being involved with the offense, the Tennessee Volunteers are suddenly one of the top teams in the SEC.
That’s my prediction no matter what the websites offering expert football picks will tell you. Tennesee is going to cover and beat a lot of spreads this year.
That’s my prediction and I’m sticking to it.
