Sunday’s Horse Pick of the Day
September 27, 2009
Race-time: 3:53 pm EST
Calder Racecourse is a place where horseplayers can find overlays on most days. Even though the track doesn’t get the respect that Gulfstream Park gets, the Florida based track that runs during late winter and early spring, Calder can provide terrific, profitable opportunities for BetOnline online racebook fans.
Let’s take a look at Race 8 at Calder on Sunday.
Calder – Race 8
Allowance Optional Claiming $16,000
For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward Which Have Never Won a Race Other Than Maiden, Claiming or Starter or Claiming Price $16,000
7 furlongs on dirt
Shoshone Girl – - 2/1 fair online betting odds
At 2 to 1, Shoshone Girl would be an overlay in this race. The daughter of Trippi is 4 out of 5 at Calder, gets hot jockey Manuel Cruz to ride, and is trained by William White who is winning at a 26% clip at the meet. Oh, yes, she’s also won 5 out of her last 6 races.
Trippi’s Greatstar – - 7/2 fair online betting odds
Another daughter of Trippi figures to get an excellent trip in this and capitalize if Shoshone Girl gets caught up in a speed duel. She is coming out of much bigger races, gets 24% winning jockey Luis Saez to ride, and has been working nicely for this. The lone knock is that she hasn’t raced since December of 2008.
Brandy Bai – - 4/1 fair online betting odds
With a record of 4 and 2 out of 8 lifetime races on the Calder dirt track, Brandy Bai is gifted enough to track the speed and get to the lead in this. She is going second time for trainer Pablo Andrade and figures to do exactly what’s needed of her to get the job done. She could be a surprise overlay play in this.
Wagering Strategy
Shoshone Girl is a stand out and I will bet her to win only. I will bet a nice exacta with Shoshone Girl keyed over Brandy Bai and Trippi’s Greatstar. I will reverse the exacta for less. I will play a saver win bet on Brandy Bai.
