Stepping it up – College Football’s Prime Time Players

October 2, 2009

Big players step up in big games, and this week, BetOnline Sportsbook takes a look at the top individual performances from last week’s games that helped you cash winning college football betting tickets…

RB Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech Hokies: Virginia Tech was supposed to have all sorts of problems at the running back this season after suffering a slew of injuries at that position in the offseason. But freshman RB Ryan Williams has done a little bit of everything for HC Frank Beamer. He introduced himself to the world last week by carrying the ball 35 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns against Miami’s stout defense. Williams also chipped in a pair of receptions for 40 yards. In the end, the freshman’s efforts were more than enough to lead the Hokies to a huge 31-7 victory and boost them up to #6 in the polls this week.

QB BJ Daniels, South Florida Bulls: When QB Matt Grothe suffered a season-ending ACL injury two weeks ago, everyone thought that USF’s season was over. Enter redshirt freshman BJ Daniels. The frosh stepped in and made Florida State’s defense look absolutely silly last week in Tallahassee, as he threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns on just eight completions. Daniels was also the only real threat on the ground for the Bulls as well, as he carried the ball 23 times for 126 yards. The 17-7 victory at Doak Campbell Stadium wasn’t just huge for South Florida bettors, but it was another step for HC Jim Leavitt in his quest to make the Bulls an annual contender for a National Championship.

QB Nathan Enderle, Idaho Vandals: Where would the Vandals be this year without their quarterback? Enderle went 18/23 for 270 yards and three touchdowns against Northern Illinois in a tremendous 34-31 upset that put Idaho one game closer towards bowl eligibility on the season. The junior has completed 63.6% of his passes for 960 yards and five touchdowns in this, his third season as the Vandals’ starting quarterback.

TE Ed Dickson, Oregon Ducks: Dickson had the game of his life against Cal last week, hauling in 11 receptions for 148 yards and three touchdowns in Oregon’s 42-3 shellacking of the Golden Bears. Dickson had only caught three touchdown passes in total in each of his last two seasons, and he only had four catches for 48 yards for the entire season coming into this game. But Cal had absolutely no answers for Dickson’s size and strength, and as a result, Oregon is back on the map in the Rose Bowl chase.

QB Jerrod Johnson, Texas A&M Aggies: No one accounted for more points for their team last week as Johnson did for A&M. The Aggies’ signal caller went 23/29 for 290 yards and three touchdowns through the air, and he added another 61 yards and three touchdowns on the ground to boot. The performance reminded Lone Star State football fans of another duel-threat quarterback that the state used to have a few years back, and any time you can be compared to Vince Young in college football, you’re doing something phenomenal.
