Stacking Up the 2011 World Series Odds
February 22, 2011
Pitchers and catchers are reporting to camps, and that means that we are just a few weeks away from the start of the 2011 MLB campaign. Check out which favorites we have our eye on in this year’s World Series odds!
Philadelphia Phillies (+300) – The Phils are the favorites on the World Series odds for good reason this year. Simply put, they have the best pitching staff in baseball, and it’s really not even all that close. Sure, there are still some bullpen problems to contend with, but when you’ve got Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Roy Oswalt, and Joe Blanton for good measure, how many more arms do you need than that? The Phillies batting lineup might have lost one of the highest paid players in the game in Jayson Werth, but they still have a lineup that is stacked. There’s a reason that this team is the runaway favorite to beat the World Series odds.

Boston Red Sox (+400) – The Sox are the second favorites to win it all, and had the Phils not landed Cliff Lee in the offseason, they’d probably be the favorites. Boston did a great job pilfering lesser teams in the winter that can’t spend as much money as it can, snaring Carl Crawford from the Tampa Bay Rays and Adrian Gonzalez from the San Diego Padres. Just check out this lineup. The only hole is really at catcher, where Victor Martinez is now gone. A potential lineup card could read Ellsbury, Crawford, Youkilis, Ortiz, Drew, Gonzalez, Pedroia, Lowrie, and Varitek (or fill in whatever blank you want at catcher). Oh yeah, those arms in the rotation of Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Taylor Buchholz, and John Lackey aren’t that bad either, even if Beckett has totally jumped the shark.
New York Yankees (+650) – After the Yankees, there really aren’t any teams to discuss that probably have a great chance to win it all. We’re not so sure about the Bronx Bombers this year, though we know that they could always go out and get whatever they want at the trade deadline. New York will have a great lineup again, but names like Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, and Alex Rodriguez aren’t getting any younger. The bullpen did get a huge upgrade in the offseason with the acquisition of Rafael Soriano to complement the great Mariano Rivera. The problem is beyond CC Sabathia in the starting rotation. Sabathia is great, but Andy Pettitte has retired, and who knows what the Yanks will get out of AJ Burnett. Phil Hughes has to prove that he is a legit No. 2 arm, and beyond that, it really is just a matter of these young kids like Ivan Novo proving they can pitch. If not, New York won’t be beating the World Series odds this year either.
