Sports Betting Free Picks – Oklahoma Over Texas A&M

November 6, 2010

After bouncing back from their first loss of the season two weeks ago with a rousing victory at home, the Oklahoma Sooners try to stay afloat in the BCS conversation as a sports betting favorite against Texas A&M. If you want to know why the number is so low on this Big 12 matchup, look no further than Oklahoma’s road record.

Quarterback Landry Jones has been terrific this season. He’s taken all the lumps in replacing star quarterback Sam Bradford extremely well, posting 2,547 yards and 21 touchdowns this season with only 5 interceptions. The Sooners are 9-1 SU in their past 10 games with Jones at the helm.

Still, the problem is betting on the Sooners away from home. They’re just 2-5 SU and 1-5-1 ATS in sports betting when playing on the road, and against Texas A&M they have historically struggled.

Oklahoma is just 1-6 ATS in their past 7 road games against the Aggies making this a tougher sports betting pick than you’d imagine. What might boost your faith in the Sooners is that they’ve gone 4-1 SU in their last 5 games against Texas A&M.

#8 Oklahoma Sooners (7-1) vs. Texas A&M Aggies (5-3)

Saturday, November 6th — Kyle Field — 7:00pm EST

Sports Betting Number: Oklahoma -3.0 (60.5)

Texas A&M isn’t a slouching team. They have simply come alive in their past two games as a sports betting pick, crushing Texas Tech and Kansas in back-to-back efforts by a combined score of 90-37. They’re also 4-1 SU in their past 5 home games.

Credit the rise of quarterback Ryan Tannehill who was thrust in to the starting lineup over the past two games. In his first game he went just 12-for-16 notching 155 passing yards and 3 touchdowns in an effective 45-10 win against Kansas on the road (he also managed a rushing score). Then, against the high flying Red Raiders, he posted 36-of-50 completions for a dazzling 449 passing yards and another 4 touchdowns.

But this game comes down to pressure. Texas A&M fans are amongst the best there are in college football, and that give A&M a decisive advantage on the field. But I’m still not sure how Tannehill responds to the kind of pressure a Big 12 rivalry game against Oklahoma presents.

The road was a cruel mistress to the Sooners against Missouri, where they lost their only sports betting matchup of the year. They’ve learned from that experience, and while I expect this to be a nail-biting affair, the Aggies will be caught because they’re a one-sided offense. Star running back Christine Michael is still out with a broken leg, and Oklahoma can drop more players back in to coverage to handle this game.

I know that Oklahoma has been weary on the road, especially when visiting the Aggies. If you place your fortunes on Texas A&M in the upset, I won’t blame you. Tannehill is embracing his role as the starter. His good times, however, come to an end when the Sooners re-assert themselves as one of the best teams in the country with a tight, chest clinching victory on the sports betting line.
