Sports Betting – #14 Florida Looks For Edge Against LSU

February 20, 2011

Sports bettors are well aware of the fact that the Florida Gators are looking like a team on the rise, and now they seek the edge against the offensively-challenged LSU Tigers in SEC action that begins at 1 PM ET on Sunday. LSU is going nowhere, and you can expect to be laying double digits if you want to be on the side of the Gators in sports betting action. Look for the game on ESPN2.

Here are some of the NCAA basketball trends that may impact this game:

  • Florida has won seven of its last eight games SU
  • Florida has covered three of its last eight games
  • Florida has won six of its last seven road games SU
  • LSU has lost its last nine games SU
  • LSU is 1-7-1 ATS in its last nine games
  • LSU has played ten of its last 12 games UNDER the total
  • LSU has lost its last four home games SU
  • LSU has played five of its last six home games UNDER the total

LSU doesn’t excel with the fundamentals; the Tigers shoot just 40% from the field, and turn the ball over 15 times a game. Sure, Trent Johnson’s team can play a little defense, and isn’t bad at playing at a pace that is designed to slow down better teams. But that hasn’t helped this squad very much in sports betting or otherwise, because it just can’t score. This game may be held in a building called the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, but believe me, there is no sign of Pete Maravich, or anyone like him, in the locker room (have we said that before?).

These are some of the head-to-head trends that apply to sports betting on this SEC game:

  • LSU has won and covered six of the last nine meetings
  • LSU has won and covered three of the last four meetings as the home team
  • Florida has made more three-pointers in eight of the last ten meetings

Florida is a hot-and-cold team when it comes to shooting the ball. Against Vandy and Mississippi State the Gators were under 40%, but the 55% effort against South Carolina was sizzling, and in the thrilling 61-60 win against Tennessee last Saturday they were almost 48%. Florida has provided more sports betting value as a road team (5-3 ATS) than it has at home (3-8 ATS).

We kind of know what they have to aim for here; since the new year, LSU has not scored more than 62 points, and in nine of those games they have tallied 56 points or less. What worries us just a little, however, is that Florida scores less than 70 points a game on the road (which puts it just inside the top hundred teams in the country). And LSU has held teams to less than 41% shooting all year long. Maybe the oddsmaker gets a little crazy, the Tigers slow it to a crawl, and they sneak inside the roomy sports betting impost.
