Marshall (1-3) is a flawed football team and is going to go through some growing pains under first year coach Doc Holliday. The Thundering Herd picked up their first win of the season last week 24-23, as Ohio scored in the closing seconds and went for the win but failed on the 2-point conversion. Don’t expect a college football pick winner on Marshall this week, as their young group of starters are sure to struggle on the road against an experienced Southern Miss defense that is among the most talented in Conference USA.

Marshall will start a pair of freshman at cornerback for the second-straight week and So. Miss quarterback Austin Davis should be able to take advantage, especially if all-league performer DeAndre Brown is able to return this week at wide receiver. Brown’s return from a leg injury would make for an easy college football pick winner, but Eagles wide receiver Kelvin Boldin is coming off the best game of his career and can help compliment a balanced offense with emerging running back Desmond Johnson. Marshall should struggle to move the ball on offense with a pair of freshman starting on a line that lacks continuity and stability. Combined with So. Mississippi’s strong and experienced defense and Marshall quarterback Brian Anderson throwing all five of his interceptions on the road, this game could have the ‘Herd running for cover.

Marshall is ranked 101 st or worse in pass, scoring and total defense. The Thundering Herd are also poor on special teams and rank 100 th in turnover margin. No surprise if our college football pick winner is fueled by the So. Miss pressure on the Marshall quarterback and turnovers follow.

Note that Marshall’s young and inexperienced players have been on the field a lot this season and it shows up in the late part of the game.
