Snapping the Skid – Colorado at San Diego

May 5, 2009

The Colorado Rockies (9-14 SU, 13-10 RL, 12-9-2 O/U) and San Diego Padres (11-14 SU, 13-11 RL, 13-10-1 O/U) will both be looking to get back in the win column for BetOnline MLB betting enthusiasts everywhere when they square off at PETCO Park tonight at 10 PM ET.

Losers of three of their last five overall, the Rockies lost to the San Francisco Giants 1-0 as a +105 underdog on Sunday as the game’s lone run played Under the posted over/under total (9).

Jason Hammel tossed six shutout innings, allowing just six hits for Colorado in the loss.

The Padres come into tonight’s contest mired in a five-game losing streak after falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-3 as a +175 underdog on Sunday.

Brian Giles and Jody Gerut hit solo home runs for San Diego while the 10 combined runs played Over the 8-run O/U total as starter Chad Gaudin was roughed up for six runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings.

Tonight, the Rockies will hand the ball to left-hander Jorge De La Rosa (0-2, 3.57) who didn’t factor in the decision Tuesday against San Diego after allowing a two-run homer to Scott Hairston and two other hits while striking out six in six innings.

The Padres will counter with right-hander Kevin Correia (0-2, 4.71 ERA) who was touched up for three runs – all off of homers by Todd Helton and Chris Iannetta – on six hits over five innings of their victory Wednesday, throwing a season-high 101 pitches against the Rockies.

Here is a look at tonight’s key betting trends, followed by my in-depth analysis and MLB Free Pick.

  • The Rockies are 4-1 in De La Rosa’s last 5 road starts vs. a team with a losing record.
  • The Rockies are 7-2 in De La Rosa’s last 9 starts vs. a team with a losing record.
  • The Padres are 4-1 in their last 5 home games vs. a left-handed starter.
  • The Padres are 5-2 in their last 7 home games.
  • The Rockies are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
  • The Over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.
  • The Under is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings in San Diego.
  • The Rockies are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings in San Diego.

MLB Odds

  • Colorado Rockies -1½ +135
  • Jorge de La Rose –L -125
  • San Diego Padres +1½ -155
  • Kevin Correia –R +105
  • Over 8 -110
  • Under 8 -110

Analysis: Despite playing on the road in this contest, I like the Colorado Rockies to cover the Run Line with Jorge De La Rose out-pitching Kevin Correia narrowly and the offensive-minded Rockies’ hitters scoring their fair share of runs at some point.

With two starting pitchers whose respective ERA’s hover around 4.00, I like the Over in a big way and believe it may be the best bet on the board for this contest.
