The Mustangs are rolling right now having won four of their L/5 games with the lone loss coming against the highly touted TCU Horned Frogs. The problem in that stretch is that they are just 1-2-1 against the lines for college football.
Head coach June Jones certainly isn’t complaining though, as wins are wins for a program that is direly trying to make it to a bowl game this year.
SMU is led by Kyle Padron under center, and he is going to be the key to beating the lines for college football in this one. He has completed 58.0 percent of his passes for 1,564 yards to go along with a stellar TD/INT ratio of 16/5. Over the L/2 weeks, Jones has really let Padron flourish as a passer in his high octane offense, and the super sophomore has responded, throwing for 752 yards and six TDs against just one pick in those two games. To no surprise, SMU won both.
The Naval Academy clearly has some problems right now, but it’s hard to identify exactly what’s going wrong. The majority of the skill players are back from last year, yet this offense is just nowhere near as efficient.
The Middies have won three out of four since losing the opener to the Maryland Terrapins, and they are playing their first home game of five this year against FBS teams.
Navy’s problem with beating the lines for college football this year might be that the team just isn’t deep enough at slot back. With Vince Murray and Alexander Teich probably out for this game with injuries, it’s going to be up to just Gee Gee Greene and Andre Byrd to carry the load with quarterback Ricky Dobbs.
Dobbs does have 317 rushing yards to lead the team this year, but he isn’t nearly on the pace for the 33 total touchdowns he had a year ago. Dobbs only has eight to speak of this year, three through the air and five on the ground.
NCAA Football Insider Tip: The Middies are 9-4 ATS in their L/13 duels against the lines for college football.
The Mustangs haven’t had much luck against Navy of late, going 0-3 SU since 2002 and just 1-6 SU and 2-5 ATS since 1995. However, we tend to think that that all changes this year. SMU clearly has enough offensive firepower to sink the Midshipmen, and we think that’s exactly what will happen, even on the road, on Saturday afternoon.
SMU will topple the lines for college football on Saturday.
My NCAA Football Predictions: SMU Mustangs (+1.5) -110
