Is Arizona State this good, or has their opposition just been that? On Saturday we’ll find out.
The Sun Devils are 2-0, but have barely broken a sweat, beating Idaho State and Louisiana-Monroe by a combined score of 88-17. They’ll have a much tougher challenge this weekend, when they go between the Hedges to take on the Georgia Bulldogs.
Georgia is looking pretty impressive themselves, having won their last two games after a season opening loss at Oklahoma State. In their victories, the offensive fireworks have been on full display, as they beat South Carolina 41-37 and won at Arkansas 52-41.
Last Saturday may have been the Bulldogs best game of the young season. In it, they totaled 570 yards of total offense and 375 yards passing in their trip to Arkansas. In the game, senior quarterback Joe Cox had the best performance of his career, throwing for 375 yards and five touchdowns. He was helped by a rushing attack led by Richard Samuel, who had the first 100 yard rushing game of his career, finishing the evening with 104 on 16 carries.
And don’t be fooled, yes the Bulldogs defense gave up a lot of points, but they also held Arkansas to just two field goals after the midway point of the third quarter. And despite giving up 17 first downs to the Razorbacks, Arkansas only got two in the decisive fourth quarter.
As for Arizona State, we really don’t know a whole lot about them. In victory last week, Danny Sullivan threw for 220 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for another.
What is concerning however is that Louisiana-Monroe was able to move the ball against the Sun Devils. And had it not been for an interception thrown by Trey Revell on the Arizona State 1-yard line, the game would have been tied at 14 shortly before halftime.
The point? If Louisiana-Monroe came into Sun Devil Stadium and was able to move the ball, what will Georgia’s offense be able to do, when they get Arizona State at home?
Also, this will be Sullivan’s first career start on the road. While again, there really isn’t a ton of information on the senior, he has thrown just one touchdown pass this season and completed only 57 percent of his passes on the young season. Georgia has already seen some of college football’s best quarterbacks in Zac Robinson of Oklahoma State and Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett.
Again, the verdict has yet to be decided on Arizona State. But until we have more proof, we’ll take Georgia at home, giving 12 ½.
Aaron’s Pick: Georgia -12 ½
