Saturday Horse Play – Big Money from Gulfstream Park
February 22, 2009
Gulfstream Park’s featured race on Saturday just happens to be our pick of the day. Often times finding an overlay in graded races is difficult to do.
Trainers and owners are hesitant to place their horses in situations where they believe their horses could fail. Of course, BetOnline online racebook fans could care less about whether a race is graded or not. Believing that you can make profits is the only reason to make a wager on any horse in any race.
Let’s analyze Race 9 at Gulfstream Park on Saturday.
Gulfstream Park – Race 9
Grade II Mac Diarmida Stakes
$150,000
For Four Year Olds and Up
1 3/8 miles on the turf
Mr. Sidney – - 8/1 morning line odds
Mr. Sidney’s speed ratings aren’t as good as some of the others in here and he’s breaking from the 10 hole, but look at his record: 3 wins, 1 second and 1 third out of 6 lifetime races. This 3.9 million buy sired by Storm Cat could be turning into a serious racehorse. Jockey Kent Desormeaux got Mr. Sidney up in the final strides in a $44,000 allowance in the horse’s last race. Now, Mr. Sidney stretches out further to this 1 3/8 mile distance. He’s the best bet in this.
Spice Route – - 3/1 morning line odds
Spice Route will go into this off of a Grade III victory at Calder Racecourse. Trained by Roger Attfield, Spice Route has been running against much better company than what he faces in this. He was 8 out of 10 in the money in 2008 and Edgar Prado takes the call. Spice Route is a very dangerous runner in the Mac Diarmida Stakes.
Baltimore Bob – - 10/1 morning line odds
This is an interesting long shot out of Helen Pitts’ barn. Baltimore Bob has gone 7 out of 9 in the money, including 5 victories, on the turf. If that wasn’t enough to turn the heads of horse racing bettors, how about the fact that Baltimore Bob is 1 for 1 at Gulfstream. That victory was his last, in a $75,000 optional claimer, and if he improves at all, he could win this at huge odds.
Wagering Strategy
I’m betting Mr. Sidney to win and place as long as he goes off at 5 to 1 or higher. I will also use Mr. Sidney, Baltimore Bob and Spice Route in an exacta and trifecta box.
