Saturday’s Pick 3 Starts in Race 7 at Gulfstream Park
January 9, 2010
Gulfstream Park has a terrific Saturday card full of stakes races. There isn’t a Grade I race on the card, but two Grade III races, the Mr. Prospector Stakes and the Old Hat Stakes, should be competitive enough to provide bettors with plenty of opportunities.
It makes sense to use the Mr. Prospector and the Old Hat to book end Saturday’s Pick 3.
Gulfstream Park Pick 3
Race 7 – Grade III Mr. Prospector Stakes (7:07 pm EST)
6 furlongs on dirt
Horses Used: #2 Custom For Carlos
Analysis: The terrific Munnings is back in this. Munnings should go off the favorite even though on paper there doesn’t appear to be another animal that could challenge Custom For Carlos in the early going. Custom For Carlos has won two races in a row in spectacular fashion, breaks from an advantageous post and can either take the lead early or stalk if some other horse gets really brave. Let’s start off the Pick 3 with a logical single.
Race 8 – Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint
5 furlongs on turf
Horses Used: #1 Elusive Warning, #3 Big Push, #5 Little Nick, #6 T.D. Vance, #8 Hockeythehayman.
Analysis: Kiaran McLaughlin sends out Elusive Warning who did very well in Dubai after racing at Aqueduct. Elusive Warning won a Grade III in Dubai and then finished 2nd in a Grade II. Big Push is a very fast horse with a 1-2-1 record on the turf and a 1-1-1 record at the distance. Little Nick will track the speed before making a run and has done well at the distance. T.D. Vance is coming off of two straight victories at 6 furlongs on the turf. Hockeythehayman is undefeated with 4 victories. Two of those victories occurred on the turf at this distance.
Race 9 – Grade III Old Hat Stakes
6 furlongs on dirt
Horses Used: #2 Female Drama, #5 Cuff Me, #6 Dances With Ashley, #11 Carphonic
Analysis: Female Drama is a Todd Pletcher trainee that is undefeated and should get the lead. If nobody goes with this filly, it can win. Cuff Me figures to try to at least press Female Drama. Cuff Me is also undefeated but went backwards some in terms of speed in its last. Dances With Ashley would be the pick to win in this. The MartinWolfson charge gets Julien Leparoux, is 2 for 2 lifetime, and can either lead or stalk. Carphonic will need a fast pace to run at but the William White trainee should get it. Carphonic is yet another filly with a shot in this.
Combinations: 1 x 5 x 4 = $20
$1 Pick 3 = $20
