Saratoga Sunday – Great Racebook Betting Action in the Grade II Fourstardave and the Grade I Ruffian Invitational

August 2, 2010

A day after the females hit the turf in the Grade I Diana and males hit the dirt in the Grade II Jim Dandy, males hit the turf in the Grade II Fourstardave and gals hit the turf in the Grade I Ruffian Invitational.

Now, that’s great racebook betting action!

Unrivaled Belle, the horse that beat Rachel Alexandra earlier this year, faces only a few rivals in the Grade I Ruffian, but is she the best horse to back based on her expected thoroughbred racing odds?

Fourstardave H. (Grade II)

Purse $150,000. A Handicap For Three-Year-Olds And Upward.

It looks like there’s a lot of speed in this race, but, really, does any horse have enough guts to go after Get Stormy as soon as the gates open?

The son of Stormy Atlantic gets the rail, will go to the lead, and will dare anybody to go with him.

I don’t believe anybody will. Doing so will end all chances of victory. Get Stormy has won 6 out of 14 races. I’m hoping he hangs on to at least 3 to 1 thoroughbred racing odds in this.

Public Speaker should be the closest to Get Stormy. I’m not sure if he’s good enough to get to the top pick, but he is fast enough to put some distance between himself and the rest of the field.

He could end up in the exacta because the Fourstardave could become a merry-go-round race.

Nownownow gets blinkers and keeps jockey Julien Leparoux.

He’s the “what’s he going to do in this race” horse meaning that blinkers could turn him back into a legitimate contender or he could just decide that he doesn’t want to run anymore and finish in last place.

I’ll throw him in because I expect decent odds.

  1. Get Stormy
  2. Public Speaker
  3. Nownownow

The answer to the question I posed up top is, “No, Unrivaled Belle is not the horse to back based on her expected thoroughbred racing odds.”

I believe that a lot of horseplayers are going to read too much into her victory over Rachel Alexandra in the Grade II La Troienne Stakes.

Because of that, I’m putting mullah on Malibu Prayer. Malibu Prayer does step up in class, but who cares? She’s simply the best horse in this race and her trainer, Todd Pletcher, owns the Saratoga meet year in and year out.

She’ll take the lead or track Unrivaled Belle. It doesn’t matter. She should win the Grade I Ruffian.

Unrivaled Belle is a good horse and deserves all of the accolades that came her way after beating Rachel, but she’s never come close to running as fast as Malibu Prayer and will be over bet.

Still, she shouldn’t finish worse than 2nd in this. Starship Angel has an outside, a very outside, chance of pulling off the upset if Malibu Prayer and Unrivaled Belle really go after each other right out of the gate.

She’s never faced this type of competition before but trainer Kiaran McLaughlin is a master horseman and jockey Garrett Gomez is one of the best in the United States.

  1. Malibu Prayer
  2. Unrivaled Belle
  3. Starship Angel

Good luck!
