Saints Have Coaching Edge – Can Payton Confuse Peyton in Superbowl 44?
No coach has given Peyton Manning more headaches during his career than Bill Belichik of the New England Patriots. But in Superbowl XLIV Manning will be going up against the underrated creativity of Sean Payton, the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Betting the Super bowl spread is hard enough as it is going in to this matchup, but when you consider the cerebral quality of Manning going up against Payton’s myriad of defensive looks and disguises, it’s even harder to make a solid Superbowl pick.
Of course this doesn’t mean to suggest that Peyton Manning is the pseudo coach of the Colts, but everyone in the NFL world knows that Peyton adjusts at the line and even calls plays in the huddle. What has always made the Colts one of the more favorable Superbowl bets this season is that they adjust to defenses extremely well. Peyton will get stumped in the first quarter, but after the opening twelve minutes he usually manages to figure things out and then it’s lights out. Frustration has been his main enemy in games, but Peyton has evolved in to an ice cold assassin under center.
Those of you searching for reasons to bet on the Saints shouldn’t be dismayed by this. Sean Payton disrupted the winning streak of Mark Sanchez, decimated Eli Manning in a 48-27 stomping and made Tom Brady look pedestrian in Week 12. Against both Kurt Warner and Brett Favre in the post season, he’s made his defense look like the most ferocious in the league. Against Minnesota especially the Saints were able to rush and disrupt Brett Favre all day, though they failed to register a sack. He has dissected quarterbacks the same way Peyton Manning has torn defenses apart.
The Saints are a star studded team, but Payton is the mastermind behind their success. If there’s any reason to swing the Superbowl picks in favor of New Orleans, it has to be Sean Payton. He’s been so efficient at coaching his team, that we haven’t even noticed that the team lost one of its defensive stalwarts in Charles Grant. The question is whether or not he can out-think the football genius of Peyton Manning.
