Running Backs Are Becoming Forgotten Heroes in Superbowl 44
Amidst all the talk about Drew Brees and Peyton Manning, the running-backs in the Super bowl are becoming a side story that nobody is reading. Of course, it’s very rare that we’re ever privileged enough to watch two quarterbacks of such caliber in the championship game. In fact this may be the best quarterback matchup we’ve seen since Elway-Favre in Superbowl XXXIII way back in 1998.
However, don’t overlook the importance of the running games when casting your Superbowl predictions. It’s easy to see why people are doing so. The Colts ranked 32nd in the league in rushing this season with just 80.9 yards on the ground per game. The Saints were much more efficient with 131.6 yards gained, ranking 6th in the NFL and 3rd with 21 rushing touchdowns.
Let’s not forget that this is going to be a muddy affair for both teams. That can seriously hinder route runners and give defensive backs the upper hand. Wet conditions can also make a ball much more slippery in the air, meaning that teams will be handing the ball off to their backs in an effort to either slow the game down or secure possessions.
The majority of the Super bowl odds are leaning towards the Colts, but if this game becomes a snail paced grind, the Saints will earn a decisive advantage. Their three-pronged rushing attack boasts a power back in Mike Bell, a utility back in Reggie Bush and an all-purpose back in Pierre Thomas. If the Saints choose to hit the ground running, they may very well be efficient enough to keep Peyton on the sidelines and keep this game tight giving them a great chance to cover the Superbowl spread.
