Preakness Stakes Betting – Exacta and Trifecta Payoffs
May 15, 2010
BetOnline Sportsbook has a ton of propositions in Preakness Stakes betting action for horse racing pundits to sink their teeth into. Today, we’re going to take a look at the prop on both the $2 payout on both the winning exacta and trifecta for the race.
Preakness Stakes Betting Odds
Exacta Over $55 -115
Exacta Under $55 -115
Trifecta Over $300 -105
Trifecta Under $300 -125
These Preakness Stakes betting lines can be summed up relatively easily. If you’re a fan of the ‘under’ on both of these props, you’re counting on one of the three major favorites to win the race and for one of the huge underdogs to not turn up on the board.
Let’s start with the big favorites.
Anyone on the board with Super Saver in an exacta absolutely will not pay out more than $55. Case in point, look at the exacta price tag in the Kentucky Derby! For a race in which he went off as a 9-1 favorite and raced with 19 other colts, Super Saver’s exacta with Ice Box only paid $152.40. Had there only been 12 horses in that field and the exacta came in as Super Saver-Ice Box, there would be no way that the price tag would surpass $55.
The other thing to strongly consider is whether or not you feel as though Super Saver will go off as an odds on favorite or not. The morning line odds saw the Kentucky Derby champ start off as the 2/1 favorite. However, a lot of negative media towards this colt won’t help his case any. If he goes off around 3/1 or so, the betting opportunities go down in this race. If he starts odds on, a whole bunch of combinations of horses will produce a $55+ exacta price.
As for the big underdogs… The problem with so many of these huge pups is that they haven’t really had a chance to run against the big boys at the three year old level. Should any of the colts that didn’t run in the Kentucky Derby find their way onto the board, particularly in the Top 2, it would be shocking.
Focusing in on the trifecta prop, we have the same sort of scenario. Super Saver on top with any other combination of horses is almost certainly resulting in a payoff of less than $300 for the triple. However, unlike in the exacta, where an underdog on top would result in an ‘over’, it wouldn’t necessarily do the same thing for the trifecta. Seeing a price in the $250s come on the board if one of the long shots won with Lookin At Lucky and Super Saver coming in 2-3 in some combination wouldn’t be surprising.
If you happen to think that Super Saver and Lookin At Lucky both finish off the board, every combination will result in two ‘overs.’
However, we just don’t see it. The two favorites really struggled at Churchill Downs, but here on a fast track in a much easier field, at least one, if not both of them will finish in the Top 2, which should make both of these propositions easy cashes for the ‘under’.
My Preakness Stakes Predictions: $2 Exacta under $55, $2 Trifecta under $300
