Pick 3 Saturday Starts with Santa Anita Park – Race 7

February 6, 2010

Even with the rains coming yet again to SoCal this weekend, the racing action at Santa Anita should be fantastic.

Three graded races, the Grade I Las Virgenes, the Grade II Robert B. Lewis Stakes, and the Grade II Strub Stakes, highlight Santa Anita’s Saturday card. Two of those graded races, the Robert B. Lewis and the Strub, make up the 2nd and 3rd legs of my Pick 3.

Pick 3 Saturday:Santa Anita Park

** All horse numbers are postpositions

Race 7 (6:36 pm EST)

$44,000 Maiden Special Weight For Three Year Olds

6 furlongs on Pro-Ride

Horses Used: 1-Imperial Pride, 3-Songfoya, 4-Royce, 9-Spring Forth

Analysis: Imperial Pride finished 2nd in his debut at this distance and on this track on January 16th. He should improve. Songfoya finished 5th, behind Imperial Pride, in that race on January 16th. It was a nice run for a debut race and it could set Songfoya up well for this. Royce went off as one of the favorites in that January 16th race. He finished only a ½ a length behind Imperial Pride and is a must use in the Pick 3. Spring Forth is the lone first time starter that could challenge my other 3 selections. Because he’s out of Unbridled’s Song, trained by Neil Drysdale, and ridden by Julien Leparoux, I have to use him on my ticket.

Race 8

Grade II Robert B. Lewis Stakes For Three Year Olds

1 1/16th miles on Pro-Ride

Horses Used: 3-Tiz Chrome, 4-Caracortado, 6-American Lion

Analysis: Tiz Chrome is trained by Bob Baffert, ridden by Garrett Gomez, and stretching out after winning a $50,000 stakes at 6 ½ furlongs by 4 lengths in his last race. He’s got a shot in this. Caracortado is undefeated and already has a victory at the 1 1/16th mile distance. He showed the ultimate professionalism in his last by splitting horses to get up for the victory. American Lion won the Grade III Hollywood Prevue in his last race. He’s been freshened since and could be any sort under the steady handling of trainer Eoin Harty.

Race 9

Grade II Strub Stakes For Four Year Olds

1 1/8 miles on Pro-Ride

Horses Used: 1-Eagle Poise, 7-Heavenly Wind, 9-Misremembered

Analysis: Eagle Poise goes first time for trainer Bill Mott, gets Leparoux to take the call, and will break from the rail. Eagle Poise has a 3-3 record out of 6 races all weather surfaces. The shipper has a big shot to upset the local horses in this. Heavenly Wind, like Eagles Poise, is a shipper with a chance. The horse comes from Turf Paradise, switches barns to Bob Hess and has a lifetime 2-1 record out of 4 starts. Misremembered went off the favorite in the Grade I Malibu Stakes in his last. He tried his best to get to loose on the lead Man One Rifle, but just couldn’t do it. Misremembered has been training forwardly since the Malibu and should be considered a “live” horse in the Strub.

Combinations: 4 x 3 x 3 = 36

$1 Pick 3 = $36
