Cincinnati Reds (+220)

Philadelphia Phillies (-300)

The first thing to take note of here is the pitching rotation. It is fairly clear that the Phillies have a dominating edge in this category.

The Phils will look to conquer the baseball playoff betting lines with Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, and Cole Hamels in the first three games of this series. The "H2O Rotation" has been absolutely lights out since coming together at the MLB trade deadline. In eight home games started by these three men since the start of August, the Phillies are a perfect 8-0.

Needless to say, if this trend holds up, the Phils are going to be marching on to the NLCS.

For the Reds, Edinson Volquez is a risky starter for Game 1, but Dusty Baker trusts him and the fact that he led the Reds to a 9-3 record this year. Bronson Arroyo does have all sorts of baseball playoff betting experience with the Boston Red Sox, but even though he won 17 games this year, he doesn’t feel like a pitcher that has the ability to shut down this lineup.

After that, Johnny Cueto will take his turn, with potentially either Homer Bailey or Travis Wood taking over after that.

The lineup would feel like a mismatch for the Phils, but that might not totally be the case. Philadelphia does have great names like Jayson Werth, Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Shane Victorino, etc., etc. to choose from, and these players have a ton of baseball playoff betting experience thanks to back to back trips to the World Series.

However, the best hitter in this series just might be Joey Votto. The Reds first basemen had a bust out season, as he challenged for the Triple Crown and led the team in every major offensive category of note. The Phillies batted .263 on the season, but Cincinnati hit .273 as a team. Don’t discount this lineup.

Finally, there’s the bullpen to contend with. This has been a bone of contention for the Phillies seemingly every year.

Brad Lidge isn’t the sturdiest closer in the world, and his other potential closer in waiting, Ryan Madson, hasn’t exactly been the greatest either. It is arguable that these two men were the reason that the Phils didn’t win the World Series last year, and might be why they don’t triumph in baseball playoff betting this year either.

When push comes to shove though, this is Philly’s series to lose. Too much experience. Too much starting pitching. That said; don’t discount this frisky Reds outfit that will compete a full nine every game.

My MLB Playoff Predictions: Philadelphia Phillies in 5 Games.
