PGA Tour – Look For Golf Betting Value in this Week’s Crowne Plaza Invitational
May 26, 2010
The field for this week’s PGA Tournament, the Crowne Plaze Invitational, is incredibly deep. Because of that, sports gamblers should look for value in the golf sportsbook. The big question then becomes whether or not the likely chalk, Phil Mickelson, represents value at the current golf odds of +700.
I’m not sure that he does.
PGA Tour: Crowne Plaza Invitational
Where: Colonial CC, Ft. Worth, Texas
When: May 27th, 2010
TV: Golf Channel – Thursday and Friday
CBS – Saturday and Sunday
Radio: Sirius – XM
Best Golf Bet A: Steve Stricker +2200
After tying for 30th at the Masters Tournament, Stricker took some time off to shore up his swing and get his head straight in time for the U.S. Open. After following his career the past couple of years, I have no doubt that the time off was well spent. Stricker could make a big return splash to the PGA Tour this week at the Crowne Plaza Invitational because he won the tournament in 2009, in a playoff over Tim Clark and Steve Marino, and won the Northern Trust Open earlier this year. Yes, he’s been close to terrible in his last two PGA Tourney starts, but this is Steve Stricker and Steve Stricker is as good as any player in the world when he’s got his swing working.
Best Golf Bet B: Jim Furyk +1400
I’ve been on Furyk’s case all year because I believe he sort of lucked into his two victories, but I have to admit that he should do very well this week at Colonial. Furyk has 6 Top 10 finishes in 14 starts at Colonial including a 9th place finish at the 2009 Crowne Plaza Invitational. That 47th place finish at The Players Championship in his last doesn’t bother me all that much because he was coming off of 1st and 7th place finishes. He was due to bounce. Now, he’s due to bounce back.
Worst Golf Wager: Phil Mickelson +700
I love me some Lefty, no doubt, but this field is deep, my friends. Any golfer going off at less than double-digit odds, that would be Lefty, is a play against in my opinion. Phil won this tournament in both 2000 and 2008 and figures to be a contender this year, but I’ll look somewhere else for more value.
Best Underdog Golf Bet: Steve Marino +4500
What’s wrong with Marino? Sure, he missed the cut at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, finished 16th at the Quail Hollow Championship and tied for 32nd at The Players Championship. He’s going to have to be much, much better than that to contend here. I get that, but I also get the fact that he finished 2nd, tying Stricker with a 17 under in last year’s Crowne Plaza Invitational before losing in a playoff. At the golf odds of 45 to 1, he’s a nice play.
Others To Consider
Tim Clark +2000 - – He finished tied with Stricker at the end of regulation in 2009 but couldn’t beat Steve in the playoff.
Paul Casey +2500 – - I still say he starts picking it up soon and that his missed cut at TPC Sawgrass was an anomaly.
Matt Kuchar +3000 – - He’s ranked 9th in scoring average, 2nd in all around ranking, and has done well at Colonial.
Frederik Jacobsen +5500 – - 55 to 1 is excellent value on a golfer that is coming off of 10th and 2nd place finishes.
