PGA Tour – Lee Westwood is the Top European Golf Betting Favorite for the St. Jude Classic

June 14, 2010

Next week is the 2010 U.S. Open Golf Championship. Although most of the U.S. golfers, like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, did all of their prep work at the U.S. Open, some of the biggest names on the European Tour have shown up at this week’s St. Jude Classic.

Lee Westwood, the 2009 Race to Dubai winner, is the favorite in the golf sportsbook to be the best European at the St. Jude Classic. Is he a good wager at the low golf odds to beat his fellow Europeans?

PGA Tour: St. Jude Classic

Where: TPC Southwind, Memphis, TN

When: June 10th thru June 13th, 2010

TV: Golf Channel and CBS

Top European

Best Golf Bet A: Ian Poulter +600

Oh, yeah, I know that Poulter has been awful lately. After his 10th at the Masters Tournament, he finished 91st at the BMW PGA Championship on the Euro Tour and then missed the cut and finished 76th at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. But, he’s #1 in the Race to Dubai standings and if there is any golfer on the planet that could turn his form around in only a couple of weeks, it’s Ian Poulter. Poulter figures to be very, very tough at the St. Jude Classic because he knows that he has to play well while Lee Westwood can use the St. Jude to get himself ready for next week.

Best Golf Bet B: Fredrik Jacobsen +650

He finished tied for 39th at the 2009 St. Jude Classic, but sports gamblers shouldn’t hold that against him. Jacobsen has fantastic past history at TPC Southwind finishing 3rd in 2003, 5th in 2004 and 6th in 2005. He’s coming off of two awful finishes at the Crowne Plaza Invitational and the Memorial Tournament but before that he finished 2nd at the Texas Open. Maybe, he could pull it off and beat his fellow Europeans at the St. Jude Classic at fantastic golf betting odds.

Worst Golf Wager: Lee Westwood +225

Hey, I believe that Westwood should be the favorite in the Top European category. I even believe that Westwood has a great shot of beating his peers in this tournament. The problem I have is one of golf odds. I just don’t believe that Westwood offers enough value at +225 as opposed to Poulter at +600 and Jacobsen at +650. He’s a bet against because there’s value elsewhere in this field not because I don’t believe he could be the best European at the St. Jude Classic this week.

Others To Consider

Rory McIlroy +325 – - McIlroy finished 10th at last week’s Memorial Tournament. He doesn’t often put together 2 good efforts in a row, but he’s still a must consider because of his overall talent.

Padraig Harrington +350 – - Based on his PGA Tour form, Paddy shouldn’t have a shot at the St. Jude, but based on his European Tour form, he’s got a big shot to be the Top European. He’s coming off of a 6th place finish at the BMW PGA Championship on the Euro Tour.

Robert Karlsson +1100 – - Based on his 11th place finish at the BMW PGA Championship in his last tournament on the European Tour, Karlsson is an overlay in the golf sportsbook to be the Top European at the St. Jude Classic.
