PGA Tour Betting – Will Marino Bounce Back At Riviera This Week?
February 17, 2011
One of the questions on the minds of people involved in PGA Tour betting is whether Steve Marino can bounce back at Riviera this week in the wake of a disaster he encountered at Pebble beach last week.
The tour is in the Los Angeles area for the Northern Trust Open, teeing off on Thursday and running through Sunday at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA. Phil Mickelson is the favorite in the PGA Tour betting odds at +750, with Marino priced at +5500.

Generally if you have a player who has had a real chance to win two of the four events he has played in, you’d see him going off at a shorter price in the PGA betting odds. But that is not the case with Steve Marino, who tied for the runner-up spot at the Sony Open in Hawaii, and was tied for fourth at Pebble Beach last week at the AT&T Pro-Am. he is a longshot right now, listed at +5500.

Steve Marino went into the final round of last week’s AT&T Pebble beach Pro-Am with the lead, then proceeded to throw it away. It seemed like he got nervous; once again in a position to win a PGA Tour event, but crumbling under the pressure. he shot a 74, and on the final hole, when he had a chance, even if a small chance, to catch up to D.A. Points (+5000 in PGA Tour betting this week), who had the lead, he started hitting the ball all the layout – into a fairway bunker, and finally, into the Pacific Ocean.
"I fought hard today and felt like I played pretty good and just didn’t work out for me," he told reporters. I can imagine how he must have felt.
But this is a game that requires bouncing back, and just as Dustin Johnson had to after his own Pebble Beach disaster last year, and subsequent ill-fortune at the PGA Championship, Marino has to do the same. He has now made 122 starts in his career and has yet to taste victory. But hey – Bubba Watson, now a highly successful Tour player (and perhaps a value at +4000 in this week’s PGA Tour betting odds) went that same number of events before finally cashing the winner’s check.
The signs point to better things happening for Marino. The 30-year-old from the University of Virginia is currently 9th in FedEx Cup points, and has a scoring average below 70 for the first time in his PGA career. I know it’s in the early going, but he’s showing up well in some of the stats as well; he is 13th in Total Driving and also 9th on the money list. He has now scored two straight top fives at Pebble Beach, and was fifth in last year’s Northern Trust Open. Maybe he’s got a shot to provide some real value in the PGA Tour betting odds this week.
