PGA Golf Odds – Past Winner Allenby Looks To End Drought At Riviera

February 17, 2011

Those people who like to challenge themselves against the PGA golf odds know that past winners at an event are usually worth looking at, and one of them is Robert Allenby, who is looking to end a drought on the PGA Tour as he tees it up at the Northern Trust Open, which starts on Thursday and concludes Sunday at the Riviera Country Club, located in Pacific Palisades, CA. The favorite in the PGA golf odds is Phil Mickelson, who is priced at +750. Allenby is a longshot at +6000. Coverage on Thursday and Friday can be seen on Golf Channel, with CBS picking things up on Saturday and Sunday.

Thursday & Friday: Golf Channel – 3-6 PM
Saturday & Sunday:  CBS – 3-6 PM

Among the players who will be lining up at Riviera this week, and playing as longshots in the PGA golf odds, is Robert Allenby, who won this event ten years ago. What made his win rather extraordinary is that he had to engage in a six-way playoff, which is almost unheard of. Allenby, a native of Australia, won one more time in 2001, and he has not won an event on the PGA Tour since.

ROBERT ALLENBY  +6000

Allenby missed the first two cuts this year, but it looked like he was bouncing back at the Phoenix Open a couple of weeks ago, as he shot 68 and 67 in the first two rounds. But he faltered over the final two rounds, with 71 and 75, and couldn’t crack the top 50 in the end. Maybe that’s one of the reason he is going off at +6000 in the PGA golf odds. But he finished 2010 with some strong efforts, as he was 17th at the Tour Championship, then followed that with top-five finishes in the McGladrey Classic and Asia Pacific Classic, and then, in the HSBC Champions, tied for 21st.

The 2001 tournament at Riviera (then known as the Nissan Open) was a wild one, to say the least. Allenby shot a 73 in the first round, but came back with 64 and 69, the next two days, followed by a 70 on Sunday. There was a lot of rain. At eight under par, Allenby found himself in a tie with five other players for the championship. He birdied the first hole of the playoff, while everyone else made par. That’s how he won. And he’s the only guy left over from that group (Brandel Chamblee, Dennis Paulson, Toshi Izawa, Jeff Sluman and Bob Tway were the others) who is at Riviera this year. Three of Allenby’s four PGA Tour wins have come in playoffs. if he could even get himself to a playoff this year, he’d be happy. Can he beat the PGA golf odds and get to that place? He appears to be a dangerous contender to do just that.
