PGA Championship – Matchup Odds from TPC Sawgrass

May 6, 2009

Tee-off: 5/7/2009

The beauty of golf betting in the BetOnline online sportsbook is that the oddsmakers offer such great odds on some bets that gamblers can actually decide which category to key on when making wagers.

Such is the case with betting the winner of individual matchups. By concentrating on betting between only two golfers, as opposed to finding the winner of the tournament, bettors can raise their odds of winning profits.

Let’s analyze the best matchup wagers in the TPC Sawgrass this week.

Golf: TPC Matchups

  1. Phil Mickelson +165 vs. Tiger Woods -210 – - Tiger is a great bet to win at 4 to 1. But to beat Phil in a straight-up matchup at -210? I don’t think so. Phil has been tough at Sawgrass the past few years while Woods hasn’t finished in the Top Ten in his last 6 starts at Sawgrass.
    Pick: Phil Mickelson at +165

  2. Sergio Garcia -130 vs. Padraig Harrington Ev – - Harrington is a terrific wager if he ends up playing against Sergio on Sunday. Garcia will fold in a matchup like that, but I don’t believe Harrington gets the chance. Garcia should be ready to fire on Thursday while Harrington will be perfecting his game for the U.S. Open in June.
    Pick: Sergio Garcia at -130
  3. Davis Love III Ev vs. David Toms -130 – - Both guys have had success at Sawgrass but Love III has been better with 6 Top Ten finishes and two victories. He’s going off at better odds and deserves the bet in this matchup.
Pick: Davis Love III at Ev
  4. Stephen Ames Ev vs. Boo Weekley -130 – - Ames has 3 Top 5 finishes and a victory in the TPC in 2006. Boo? Not even close. Like Davis Love III, Ames is easily the better wager in this matchup at the better odds.
    Pick: Stephen Ames at Ev
  5. Luke Donald -120 vs. Sergio Garcia -110 – - Donald has been playing much better overall this year than Garcia, but Sergio returns to the site of his top 2008 victory. In deciding to bet on Sergio, I’m saying that he will improve off of his so far terrible form.
    Pick: Sergio Garcia at -110
  6. Ernie Els -110 vs. Retief Goosen -120 – - Els just hasn’t been playing as well as Goosen this season. Goosen has a victory this season and finished 11th in the Quail Hollow last week. Of course, what’s in Els’s favor is the fact that Goosen has been both hot and cold at Sawgrass. Still, I’m going with Goosen.
    Pick: Retief Goosen at -120
