Pebble Beach National Pro Am – Group Golf Betting

February 10, 2011

No Tiger Woods means that there isn’t a true favorite in the golf betting to win this week’s Pebble Beach National Pro Am.

Group A, as is usually the case, appears to be particularly tough as Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Nick Watney, Tim Clark and Jim Furyk are all part of Group A. Check out a free pick for Group A, and all of the other groups, below.

Golf:  Pebble Beach National Pro Am

Where:  Pebble Beach, California

When:  Feb. 10th thru Feb. 13th

Par/Yardage:  par 72, 6,816 yards

TV:  CBS

Group A:  Dustin Johnson +200, Phil Mickelson +220, Nick Watney +350, Tim Clark +450, Jim Furyk +550

Analysis:  I did write that Group A appears to be tough, right?  It actually isn’t.  Furyk is a consider at the +550 overlaid golf odds to win the group, but Clark, who doesn’t have much of a distance game, and Lefty, who will find a way to blow it, and will probably blow it in a big way, are throw outs.  That leaves DJ and Nick.  Out of the two, I’ve got go with Watney to back up all of my wagers on DJ to win this tournament.  I’ll use Watney as my “hedge” bet on the Pebble Beach this week.

Pick:  Nick Watney

Group B:  Geoff Ogilvy +220, Hunter Mahan +350, JB Holmes +350, Vijay Singh +350, Padraig Harrington +350

Analysis:  I’m tossing Singh because he finished 3rd at the Phoenix Open last week and I just can’t believe he can do anything close to a Top 5 at two straight tournaments.  JB, Hunter, Ogilvy and Paddy all have a shot.  I’m tossing Geoff because the +220 odds are just too low on him to win this group.  Who do I like?  How about Harrington who can be just as good, or as bad, as his incredible talent will let him be week to week.  At +350, I’ll take a swing on the Irishman to get it done.

Pick:  Padraig Harrington

Group C:  DA Points +300, Pat Perez +300, Marc Lieshman +350, Brenden De Jonge +350, Rory Sabbatini +350

Analysis:  Points’ 5th at the Farmer’s Insurance was very, very nice.  His 18th at the Phoenix Open was actually more impressive because it showed that he can follow up a decent finish with a great finish week to week.  Points didn’t play at the 2010 Pebble Beach National Pro Am but he’s 7th in the all-around ranking on the PGA Tour.  Do I like the chalk?  I sure do.  I really like him considering that he’s not to big of a chalk in the online sportsbook to win the group.

Pick:  DA Points

Group D:  Brian Gay +200, Jonathan Byrd +300, Bo Van Pelt +320, Mark Wilson +350, KJ Choi +400

Analysis:  I absolutely hate going chalky at +200.  So, I won’t meaning that Gay is the throw out.  Byrd, Pelt, Wilson and Choi all have a shot to win this group.  I’ll go with Choi because the odds are better and KJ finished in 21st place, like Byrd, at the 2010 Pebble Beach National Pro Am.  Wilson finished 70th and so did Van Pelt.

Pick:  KJ Choi
