Padres Young Gun – San Diego at Colorado

April 28, 2009

The San Diego Padres (10-8 SU, 10-7 RL, 9-7-1 O/U) and Colorado Rockies (6-11 SU, 8-9 RL, 10-5-2 O/U) will both be gunning for an SU and RL victory in the BetOnline Sportsbook when they meet at Coors Field tonight at 8:30 PM ET.

The Padres lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-3 as a -190 favorite on Sunday while the 11 combined runs played Over the 7.5-run O/U total.

The Rockies defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-4 as a -110 favorite on Sunday while the 14 total runs played well Over the 10.5-run Over/Under total (10.5).

The Padres will hand the ball to right-hander Chris Young (2-0, 3.42 ERA) while the Rockies counter with right-hander Jason Hammel (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Young bounced back from a terrible outing against Philadelphia in his previous start to toss seven scoreless innings in San Diego’s 1-0, 10-inning loss at San Francisco on Wednesday.

Hammel has made three relief appearances for Colorado this season but went 2-2 with a 4.88 ERA in five starts last year with Tampa Bay.

Here is a look at tonight’s key betting trends, followed by my in-depth analysis and MLB Free Pick.

The Padres are 5-0 in Young’s last 5 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance.

The Padres are 5-1 in Young’s last 6 starts.

The Rockies are 2-5 in their last 7 games following a win.

The Rockies are 2-5 in their last 7 home games with the total set at 9.0-10.5.

The Padres are 5-1 in Young’s last 6 road starts vs. Rockies.

The Over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Colorado.

The Under is 4-1 in Young’s last 5 starts vs. Rockies.

The Padres are 8-2 in Young’s last 10 starts vs. Rockies.

The Over is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.

MLB Odds

San Diego Padres +1½ -190

Chris Young –R Ev

Colorado Rockies -1½ +160

Jason Hammel –R -120

Over 10 -105

Under 10 -115

Analysis: Neither ballclub is playing very well coming into this contest, with San Diego having dropped five of six and Colorado going just 2-7 over their last nine.

With the superior starting pitcher taking the bump in this one and a batting order that is at least the equal of Colorado’s, the San Diego Padres are the correct pick to win and cover the Run Line in this contest.
