Orioles vs Giants – Baseball Betting Odds

June 14, 2010

After a weekend of exciting baseball betting action, interleague play continues on Monday night. That’s when the Baltimore Orioles will travel west to take on the San Francisco Giants.

While this certainly has been a season to forget in Baltimore, their future looks bright thanks to Monday’s starter. That’d be young righty Chris Tillman.

Tillman is hardly a household name, and his numbers aren’t all that impressive early on, however he has been a top prospect of the Orioles, and is expected to anchor their staff for years to come. After dominating in the minor leagues, Tillman was called up and has struggled so far in his go around with the big club.

Baltimore Orioles (17-46 SU, 25-38 R/L, 22-38-3 O/U) at

San Francisco Giants (35-27 SU, 30-32 R/L, 29-28-5 O/U)

Monday, June 14: 10:15 p.m.

Betting Odds:

Baltimore: +1 ½, -125, +175 (Chris Tillman-R)

San Francisco: -1 ½, +105, -210 (Jonathan Sanchez-L)

Total Runs:

Over 7 ½: -110

Under 7 ½: -110

He’s currently 0-2 with a 5.54 ERA, although those numbers are a bit misleading. In two of his three starts he’s allowed two earned runs or less, but his earned run average ballooned because a four run, 1.1 inning outing against Boston a few weeks back. Expect a more poised, under control Tillman on Monday.

The young righty will be opposed by lefty Jonathan Sanchez of San Fran. After emerging last year, Jonathan Sanchez has continued to be impressive, now in his fourth full year in the big leagues. While his record stands at just 4-5, look beyond Sanchez’s record to the peripheral stats. He’s got just a 2.82 ERA, and has been phenomenal of late, allowing just four earned runs in his last 16.1 innings thrown.

Offensively this game likely won’t be high scoring, simply because these are two of the worst lineups in baseball.

Looking at the raw numbers on the Orioles makes baseball bettors everywhere cringe. Currently they’re ranked 30th out of 30 teams in total runs scored, plating just 3.22 per game. Their team batting average is .248 and they’ve hit just 49 home runs on the year, ranking them 23rd of 30 in both those categories as well.

Unfortunately the Giants aren’t much better, averaging just 4.27 runs per game. Their team batting average is a more impressive .266 though.

While all logic points to taking the Giants in your baseball bet, the smart play here is actually Baltimore.

Yes, it sounds crazy, but think about it: San Francisco is coming a three game sweep of their hated bay area rivals Oakland this weekend, while Baltimore limps in losing three straight to the Mets. The Giants will likely come out overconfident after their big sweep, the Orioles with something to prove.

And don’t underestimate Tillman. Savvy baseball bettors know his name, and have for some time, the kid is going to be a star. After pitching well in his last outing against the Yankees, look for him to have an easy go of things against this weak San Francisco lineup.

We’re not saying that Baltimore is better than San Francisco, but they will be Monday night. Make them your baseball bet!

Aaron’s Pick: Baltimore Money Line (+175)
