There is probably a little more urgency for Marquette to win games like this, because they have seven defeats already, although when you look at their strength of schedule you understand why they may get an NCAA bid anyway. They have scored wins over West Virginia and Notre Dame, and the losses have almost always been very close. Marquette has been beaten by five points by Duke, three by Gonzaga, five by Wisconsin, one by Vanderbilt and Louisville, and five points to Notre Dame, which was the last outing in South Bend.
As they did against the Irish, Marquette did have a bit of a meltdown when visiting Louisville, as they blew a game where they had a 16-point lead with just six minutes left. That was nonetheless a cover in the online sportsbook, and the Eagles have beaten the number in seven of their last eight games. The biggest margin of defeat has been eight points at the Petersen Events Center to Pittsburgh. In other words, with a break here or there, Buzz Williams’ team could be hovering around the top fifteen in the country.
Here are some of the trends that are related to online sportsbook betting on this game:
- UConn has won four of its last six games SU
- UConn has lost 13 of its last 19 road games SU
- UConn has played its last five road games OVER the total
- Marquette has covered seven of its last eight games
- Marquette has won its last five home games SU
- Four of the last five meetings have gone OVER the total
Suddenly Marquette has suffered some very crushing defeats where they have had victory in their hands. And now they need to bounce back. Will they cover in the online sportsbook? Like I said, for purposes of making a case for an at-large bid to the tournament, this is a big game for them. UConn is a tough customer, having beaten Texas, Villanova and Tennessee within the last five days. They have won two big games despite Kemba Walker, the national player of the year candidate, shooting just 12 for 35 in those contests. Against Tennessee this past weekend, They got balance, with four players scoring between 12 and 16 points, and that is pretty good news. We are going to take the points with a team that is playing that well, so we’re on the Connecticut side, plus 4.5 points in the online sportsbook odds.
