Oklahoma is a Big Lines on College Football Fave to Punish Iowa State

October 16, 2010

The #6 Oklahoma Sooners, fresh off of putting a 28 to 20 beat down on Texas in the Red River Rivalry, is a close to 24-point lines on college football favorite to hand Iowa State a huge loss on Oct. 16th.

70% of football handicappers at this point in the betting believe that the Sooners will indeed cover the spread even though Oklahoma is 2 and 3 versus the spread in their 5 games this season. Oklahoma has failed to cover 3 other double-digit spreads in 2010.

Are the Sooners looking at a 4th non-cover this Saturday?

NCAAF Betting Lines

Iowa State Cyclones +23 ½ -110
Oklahoma Sooners -23 ½ -110

The lines on college football betting trends favor both teams in this game.

  • The Iowa State Cyclones are 7 and 3 ATS in their last 10 games on the road.
  • The Iowa State Cyclones are 4 and 1 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog of 10 ½ points or greater.
  • The Oklahoma Sooners are 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 conference games.
  • The Oklahoma Sooners are 4 and 1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.

The key in determining what team will cover the lines on college football spread is whether or not Iowa State’s offense will be capable of putting points on the board against Oklahoma’s D.

Oklahoma is going to score. That’s a given. The Sooners average 32 points per game and Iowa State allows 30 points per game, but what about Iowa State’s offense versus that Sooners D?

Oklahoma’s defense gets rocked for around 22 points per game. They gave up 24 points to both Utah State and Air Force and 29 to Cincinnati. It’s not a shut down defense, that’s for sure, but it doesn’t face the most explosive offense in the Big 12 in Iowa State either.

Or…does it? Although Iowa State’s offense averages only 26.7 points per game, it has been fantastic a couple of times this season. Iowa State hung 27 on Northern Illinois, a better than many believe football team, in Week 1.

It produced 52 points against Texas Tech and 27 against Utah. The Cyclones should be able to put points onto the board against Oklahoma.

A couple of key things are leading me to backing Iowa State in the lines on college football for this game. First, Oklahoma hasn’t given up less than 17 points to a single team this season.

Second, Oklahoma is coming off of a huge victory over Texas. The last time they played off of a huge victory, a 47 to 17 blow out of Florida State, they almost lost in a 27 to 24 battle royal victory versus Air Force.

Iowa State won’t need to make its game against Oklahoma as close as Air Force made its game against the Sooners. Heck, they can almost make it as close as Florida State did versus Oklahoma and still come out on top in the lines on college football.

I just believe that Oklahoma plays down to their competition, that’s the kind of team that they are. They figure to play down to Iowa State this Saturday. The Cyclones have 23 ½ points to work with. That should be plenty for them to cover the lines on college football spread in this game.
