Oh, Baby! Glen Davis Drains Game Winning Bucket at the Buzzer
May 11, 2009
Glen Davis may have to change his name to “big money” or “big-shot Baby Davis” as he buried a game winning jumper with zero’s on the clock to lift the Celtics to a one point victory on the road in Orlando to even the series at two apiece. Big Baby rolled into the corner off a pick and wound up with a ball he probably had no business holding at that point in the game. Nevertheless, the pass came with just second left and Davis made no mistake, elevating over a hard charging Rashard Lewis and hitting nothing but net as time expired.
The 21-foot jumper ended a furious rally by the Magic and grasped victory from the jaws of defeat on Sunday night to even their Eastern Conference semifinal at two games apiece. You could almost picture the man Davis was into replace, Kevin Garnett, hitting that same shot from the elbow which just happens to be his bread and butter. Instead it was the baby faced assassin who took it and knocked down a swish that changed the series for Boston.
Not only did Davis not expect to be in the game at that point in a game until Garnett went down with a season-ending knee injury, but he would have never guessed he’d be getting to take the biggest shot of his career. So its little doubt that being the hero in such a huge game was exciting to say the least for the big man and he seemed to relished his newfound celebrity in the post game interviews.
“This is really neat,” he said. “This is my first time, so bear with me.”
Davis took the pass from Paul Pierce, and calmly made the jumper and ran to half-court where he was mobbed by teammates and coaching staff in a scene that will be etched in his mind for a long time to come. The only thing that could have made that sweeter would have been the roar of a packed home crown audience; instead it was a stunned Orlando home crowd that was left speechless as the Celtics celebrated. It’s no doubt that fans went bananas from their respective watering hole when that shot went down and they’ll have a chance to catch it in person when the series shifts back the bay state on Tuesday night.
Davis did it all down the stretch as he also hit a 15-foot jumper in the final minute and finished with 21 points. The jumper that ended it followed a pair of free throws by Lewis that put the Magic ahead with 11.3 seconds to play. Paul Pierce didn’t surprise anyone with his game high 27 points and Rajon Rondo continues to impress as he matched Davis with 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, which are crazy numbers for a point guard.
The game leaders for Orlando were Dwight Howard who had 23 points and 17 rebounds, and Lewis scored 22 for the Magic.
