October 16, 2010

We are down to the final four teams as the National League and American League Championship Series begin Friday and Saturday. The New York Yankees are in Texas to face the Rangers Friday for game one of the ALCS and the San Francisco Giants open the NLCS in Philadelphia against the Phillies.

Let’s look at the final four teams’ odds to win the World Series and make an early prediction from the final four.

Philadelphia Phillies 6/5

New York Yankees 7/4

Texas Rangers 5/1

San Francisco Giants 6/1

Philadelphia Phillies 6/5 odds to win the World Series

The Philadelphia Phillies are the most complete team in the postseason. They led the National league in regular season scoring and their playoff rotation matches up against the remaining teams. All eyes will be on Roy Halladay to see what he’ll do for an encore after he threw just the second no-hitter in MLB odds postseason history. When your team boast Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels as your second and third starters it’s safe to assume your hitters won’t be asked to do too much. Nevertheless, with Ryan Howard, Jason Werth and Shane Victorino will get hits and put runs on the board.

New York Yankees 7/4 odds to win the World Series

27 World Series titles and 40 American League Pennants, no other team can boast a resume like that. The Yankees catch a break by avoiding Cliff Lee in game one of the ALCS. The lineup is full of veterans who’ve been here before. The only concern is the pitching staff, which can be brilliant and awful all in the same series, particularly if AJ Burnett takes the mound. Alex Rodriguez broke out of his postseason funk in 2009 but the Yanks are still waiting for his bat to come alive in 2010.

Texas Rangers 5/1 odds to win the World Series
Texas won their first postseason series in franchise history after getting two brilliant performances from Cliff Lee. They have to hold Lee back until game three after he closed out the Tampa Bay Rays in game five of the series. The Rangers have the bats to compete with any of the teams remaining. The drop off after Lee in the rotation is a concern. CJ Wilson is capable of a throwing a gem but Lee and Wilson can’t pitch every day.

San Francisco Giants 6/1 odds to win the World Series

The Giants have arguably the best rotation of the four teams remaining. Led by Tim Lincecum, Jonathan Sanchez and Matt Cain, the Giants can shut down any team they face. The problem is there is no argument when it comes to how bad the Giants bats are. The Giants could conceivably allow four runs in the NLCS and still be swept.

I see the Yankees experience and the Phillies combination of brilliant pitching and solid hitting winning them the ALCS and NLCS champions respectively.

In the World Series, the Yankees and Phillies bats are about even but the Phillies rotation trumps the Yankees and that will be the difference. The Phillies will win their second World Series Title in three years.
