The Notre Dame Fighting Irish enter this Week 5 tilt with the Boston College Eagles off a debilitating 37-14 defeat at the hands of what looks to be a top notch Stanford Cardinal outfit. The defense had no answer for QB Andrew Luck who went on to throw for 238 yards and a score.
Thankfully, ND will run up against a field general making his first ever start at the collegiate level in the form of Chase Rettig.
Finally, after battling the likes of Denard Robinson from Michigan, Kirk Cousins from Michigan State, and the aforementioned Luck from Stanford, the Golden Domers pass defense will finally get a reprieve and gain some much needed confidence against an untested rookie for all intents and purposes.
This should allow for ND’s stop unit, which has allowed a total of 99 points the L/3 weeks, to finally flex its defensive muscles.
Boston College also suffered an embarrassing home defeat last week against the Virginia Tech Hokies who blanked them 19-0 in a game that wasn’t as close as the 19 point spread.
While BC sports yet another solid defensive unit ranked 35th in yards allowed (309.7 YPG), 6th against the run (71.3 YPG) and 31st in points allowed (17.3 PPG), the offense has been simply dreadful. So poor in fact that head coach Frank Spaziani has decided to go with untested freshman QB Chase Rettig after both David Shinskie and Mike Marscovetra failed miserably.
He’ll hope that RB Montel Harris can get going against Notre Dame’s 98th ranked rush defense (189.8 YPG), but to date, BC’s rushing attack has been grounded averaging just 115 YPG (#93).
NCAA Football Insider Tip: Up until last season, BC held a stranglehold on the recent series with the Eagles coming out on top in each of their previous six battles; they went 3-3 ATS during that stretch. While the underdog has cashed in six of these teams L/7 sportsbook encounters, I expect the Fighting Irish to halt their losing streak at three and secure the pointspread cover in the process.
Boston College will be relying upon a quarterback wet behind the ears to help lead it to victory in this spot. On top of that, while the Eagles sport one of the nation’s best defenses in overall yards allowed, it’s been woeful against the pass allowing opponent’s to rack up 238.3 YPG (#83) through the air.
Head coach Brian Kelly had to of been licking his chops breaking down the game film for this match-up knowing full well his field general, Dayne Crist, has the potential to blow up in this spot.
Though Notre Dame is a bankroll bursting 1-10 ATS the L/11 times it was favored, it stands 6-2 ATS the L/8 times it was installed a road favorite. Look for the Irish to avenge 2008’s 17-0 shutout defeat in this venue and cover the sportsbook number in impressive fashion.
My NCAA Football Predictions: Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-2.5) -110
