The Philadelphia Flyers visit the Boston Bruins in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semi-final with the NHL odds stacked against them.

Down 3-1 in the series, the Flyers will have to win two Games in Boston if they hope to win the series.

Monday night marks the first test tor the resurgent Flyers.

Boston leads series 3-1

Philadelphia Flyers: +125

The Philadelphia Flyers are in the second round of the NHL playoffs for a reason. They defied the NHL odds by eliminating the New Jersey Devils and did so with good play rather than luck.

The Flyers have been able to stay close to the Boston Bruins but have come up just shy in every game but one.

The Flyers are a good team and should not be discounted this late in the season.

The Flyers offense got a nice surprise on Friday with the return of Simone Gagne to the lineup. He added an offensive spark, a leadership quality and he also solidified the first line that had been relying on goofball Daniel Carcillo to anchor it. Face it folks, Gagne is ten times the player that any one of his “replacements” were.

With Mike Richards playing elite calibre hockey and Daniele Briere finally looking like the $5 million player that he is, the Flyers are a bit scary right now.

The Flyers offense is not the only aspect of their game that should be feared. Chris Pronger has been rock solid on defense for Philadelphia and Matt Carle was able to generate four assists in Friday’s win. The Flyers are defending well and contributing on offense as well.

With all members of the Flyers chipping in anything is possible in Game 5.

Brian Boucher is the X-factor. Sound familiar? He will make or break the Flyers on Monday night.

Puckline: Philadelphia: +1.5 (-250): Boston: -1.5 (210)

Boston Bruins: -145

The Boston Bruins had their chance to complete a monumental sweep of the Flyers on Friday night. Now they have to contend with a rejuvenated Philadelphia team on Monday night in another elimination game.

The Bruins are 5-0 on home ice during these playoffs and have emerged as one of the most complete team left in this year’s post season. The 30th ranked regular season offense is playing over their heads while the 2nd ranked defense has kept up their solid play. Tuukka Rask has been superb.

Boston came back from two separate two goal deficits on Friday night, showing character and grit along the way. Bergeron, Recchi and Milan Lucic, who has a five game points streak going are a load and could be tough to manage. But the Flyers got the taste of confidence that has been lacking in the series.

I like the Flyers to extend the series in another close game on Monday.
