NFL Spread Betting – Jets and Patriots Collide on MNF
December 5, 2010
Though Rex Ryan would have you believe that this is the most important game of the season, the truth of the matter is that his team still has much to prove in NFL betting.
So far, the New York Jets possess a clean 9-2 SU and 7-4 ATS record this season but many pundits are pointing to the fact the Mark Sanchez is still a relatively unknown entity in cold weather. Can he match the continuing heroics of MVP candidate Tom Brady or will the Jets live up to all the hype?

The Jets should be a much more physical team than they are. Part of that is the inexperience on the offensive line, and LaDanian Tomlinson is beginning to suffer because of it. New York will need to rely on their top ranked road rushing offense (166.8 yards per game) since they can’t fully depend on Mark Sanchez in frigid temperatures.
I know it’s a weird point to labor on, but the fact is that the California born Sanchez even admitted that last season was one of the first times in his life that he had played in sub-zero temperatures. He’s not used to it, and Mother Nature’s winter touch can have a strange affect on players who aren’t ready for the frostbite,.
That’s part of the reason this line is moving away from the Jets in NFL spread betting. We’re used to New England playing in the cold and while I had a bad feeling that part of the reason they beat Pittsburgh and Indianapolis was more of a statement, they also thrashed Detroit on Thanksgiving Day. It’s safe to say that any issues we had about the Patriots in the post-Moss era, or the worries we lagged on with the young defense, are now a distant memory.
New York Jets (9-2) vs. New England Patriots (9-2)
Monday, December 6th — Gillette Stadium — 8:20pm EST
NFL Spread Betting Line: New England -4.0 (45.5)
This is an incredibly tight matchup for both teams. The Jets are undefeated on the road this season, but don’t have that same kind of success in New England. In their past 8 visits to New England, the Jets have gone 2-6 SU. However, the fact that they’re listed as road dogs in football betting this weekend should offer a bit of relief. New York is a staggering 10-4 ATS when visiting the Patriots in their last 14 visits.
Historically this has been an even matchup but the Patriots have struggled against the Jets when playing at home. They’re just 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games overall when playing New York as well. To make matters worse, New England is just 2-3-1 ATS in their last 6 games at home.
Part of the reason for that is because the Patriots have had trouble finding a rhythm with a young defense and a new set of receivers anchored by Deion Branch and Wes Welker. They finally have the tight-ends to make big plays, and the combination of Patrick Chung and Jared Meyo have made them a much more balanced team and overall a much more favorable NFL spread betting team.
It’s sometimes hard to bet against discipline, especially when it comes to New England.
New England is still very vulnerable through the air in the corners, however, and that’s where the Jets love to strike most. What trends tend to ignoreis momentum and caliber. The Patriots are just 3-2 ATS in NFL spread betting largely because they’ve been playing much better teams. The combined record of the Jets’ last four opponents is 14-32 SU, so it isn’t that surprising that they’ve picked up wins in all those games.
The Patriots, meanwhile, man handled Pittsburgh at Heinz Field and then overcame the Indianapolis Colts during a Peyton Manning flurry in the fourth quarter. This team seems invigorated and focused since losing to Cleveland, and there is no way I can back off them in this game.
The Jets will get a shock to their system since it’s been so long since they’ve been matched up against a good team. The last time that happened was when they played Green Bay and were shutout 0-9 in an NFL spread betting loss .
I have made a staunch stance that the New York Jets are an overrated team, and though they have a tremendous value in NFL betting, there season comes crashing down when the New England Patriots destroy them at home.
Don’t count out the Jets keeping this close, but when it comes to Brady in the cold, at home against a young quarterback who doesn’t know how to handle such temperatures (especially at night), then my NFL spread betting pick is going with the known instead of the unknown.
